Hello,

I am the Accounting and IT leader for a 400M USD auto parts supplier in the midwest.  We need to move away from Great Plains version, which won't be supported in a few years.

Does anyone have an implementation partner recommendation?

Limited accounting staff so hands on project management support from the partner will needed.

Thank you

You can find a Microsoft Partner at the link above. Often you can submit it through Microsoft and it pushes an RFP type request out to Partners.

Generally speaking, we try to avoid anything that might appear to be advertising or driving people to specific partners on these boards so we can keep it community focused. While I have worked with a few partners and know the quality of people in them, your best bet is to go through the official Microsoft side or do some separate research on your own.

I would make a few suggestions as you do so:
    • Fees are obviously important, and you will likely see a wide range of hourly costs for implementation partners
    • Bigger is not always better, but the big firms do have the advantage of often having more resources and resources with experience in specific industries. You want to be careful if you have a small partner, as you don't want the project to stall or get shelved for a few months if they experience resourcing issues
    • Ask them how they manage projects, and make sure you and your team stay involved the whole time. Doing a transition like this is very possible, but it isn't hands-off from your side. Understand up front with a partner how they project manage, how change requests or delays are handled, and get everything in the SOW
    • Make sure the personalities mesh. Get some face time with the actual implementation team if possible. I love the Sales team because they do the hard part and get the relationship started, but you will see significantly less of them once the SOW is started and you don't want to get stuck with someone you can't stand for the next 12-18 months
    • Ask about domestic vs. off-shore resourcing and how the firm does it. For cost reasons, many firms are moving to off-shore resources for development and configuration work while the project leads are domestic. Think about your preferences and understand up front how they handle this
      • Note: My above point is no way disparaging to international resources. The vast majority of them are extremely skilled, and using those resources can often bring down the price of the project. However, it does add in an extra dimension that I think is important to know as it adds another layer to the implementation team.

Hope this at least somewhat helps. Most of my experience has been with Accounting firms that have Consulting groups that do implementations like this (pretty much all of the top 10 US Accounting firms offer this service). The people have been good, but you have to find the right fit.

Before you can find an implementation partner, you need to decide what you want to implement (so you can find a partner experienced with what you actually need). You mentioned you want to move from GP, but not what you want to use instead.

If you've already came from an analysis of your requirements and your options (how features of different ERP systems match your requirements, whether there are helpful ISV solutions, what needs to be developed and how difficult it would be in different systems...) and have chosen a particular ERP, start looking for partners implementing the particular one.

If you haven't done the analysis and you don't know yet whether you want to implement SAP, D365FO, D365BC or something else, you can't select an implementation partner yet. But you may be looking for someone to help you with the analysis and the decision.
