Problems installing SQL Server Express 2008 R2

I have a client who is out of space for the data base with SQL server Expess 2005.  They have reached the data base size limit.

When attempting to update thier SQL to SQL server Express 2008 R2, the install fails while attempting to install microsoft.SQLServer.transfer.Jobstask.

What could be the cause of this?  Do we need to stop the SQL server service before installing SQL Server 2008 R2, and upgrading the existing instance of SQL?  Could it be caused by RMS not being closed somewhere on the system?

    The solution was as I had supposed, I neded to stop the SQL server service before installing SQL Server 2008, and upgrading the existing instance.  Once I did this the install proceeded without a problem.
