Guidance Needed on Using Multiple vs. Single Extensions

Hello, Communities!

One of our clients has requested to work with multiple custom extensions, but we are advising them that using and maintaining a single extension is more beneficial. The client is leaning towards multiple extensions due to the following reasoning:

  • Understandably, they believe that related functionalities dependent on each other should be grouped in one extension. Alternatively, they believe that these should be separated.
  • They feel debugging might be challenging with a single extension.
  • Additionally, they are concerned that if everything is included in a single extension, they will have to frequently verify whether the existing functionality is working correctly. This is their primary concern.

However, we are suggesting a single extension based on these advantages:

  • Reduces downtime and ensures smoother management.
  • Avoids conflicts and dependencies between multiple extensions.
  •  Saves time and effort in identifying and resolving issues.
  • Enhances overall efficiency and scalability.

We would greatly appreciate your thoughts and suggestions on this matter. What would you recommend in this scenario?

Thank You

In this scenario, both single and multiple extensions have their own merits and drawbacks
using a single extension is generally more efficient as it simplifies management, reduces downtime, and avoids conflicts between dependencies, making debugging easier. However, if the functionalities are independent and require flexibility, multiple extensions can offer modularity and isolation of issues. It's best to group related functionalities together in one extension while keeping isolated, unrelated features as separate extensions for easier maintenance and quicker updates.

For smaller, tightly coupled features: A single extension
For larger, independent modules: Multiple extensions
