How to ship Items from a Project

How are items shipped and posted from Projects in BC?
I have 3 scenarios:
1. Where Assembly orders are created and we need to ship them to customers as soon as they are fulfilled on a Project. There are 2 locations - one where bins are turned on and another where bins are turned off on the Location card.
2. Where items from inventory are shipped as part of the project. We want to include delivery dates and despatch note.  Again, There are 2 locations - one where bins are turned on and another where bins are turned off on the Location card.

    Hello,

BC cannot ship directly from a Job.
You either consume to the project or ship to the customer, and that determines the document flow:

    1) Assembly → ship to customer

Use a Sales Order linked to the Job

    Ship from Sales Order

    Bins ON: via Warehouse Shipment

    Bins OFF: direct shipment

    2) Inventory items for the project

Internal use: Job Journal (no shipment)

Customer delivery: Sales Order → Shipment

    Same bin rules as above

Delivery note/dates come from the Sales Shipment

    Regards,

That’s a very common question people ask, but that’s not how the architecture is designed for Jobs/Projects. The way it works is that you must consume the item for a project, and then the system will record the actual cost. If it’s marked as billable, you can eventually invoice the customer for it.
Physical shipment—like a Sales Order—for a Job/Project for planned items is not allowed.

You can always use a workaround, but it will still remain a workaround.

If you want BC to track the shipment for Project Inventory you need to setup a Location (can fill in the address on the Transfer) for the Project.  That Location will be replenished with a Transfer from your Warehouse.  The Warehouse is replenished from a Purchase, Production, or Assembly (Stock).

With this scenario the Project demand will cause a suggestion for a Transfer, which is how you manage the shipment of material.  The transfer will move Items from your warehouse to the Project site.  During the Project you will consume the material at the Project site, in BC you will Post the Project Journal to record that consumption.

This allows you to track inventory in your Warehouse verse Project Site as well as manage the shipping/receiving of product to and from Project Sites.

The use of Bins is irrelevant to this scenario.  It is simply an additional piece of information you record during the process for that Location.

The use of the Planning Worksheet will help automate a lot of the document creation required to streamline this process.  Doing it manually is likely more hassle than it is providing value.

I hope this helps point you in the right direction.

P.S. It works for Assemble-to-Order Project Lines as well, as the Location on the Component Lines will also be your Project Location.

    Thanks Ben
Your suggestion is good to create demand at the project site (location) and a Transfer Order can be created as a result. This would work well for sotocked items. However, if it is an Assemble to Project, the project journal consumes the item to fulfill the Assembly order (so I believe), so I fail to see how a a transfer order could be used in that scenario because there's no quantity in stock after the assembly item order is fulfilled.

You can also look into an add-on, there are some that support shipping an item to a customer while consuming it to a project as well.

It works the same for Assemble to Project Items.  The Project Planning Line (ATO Item) will list the Project Location.  Therefore, the Assembly Line components will also have the Project Location.  This means there will be demand generated to Transfer the components to the Project Location.  When the Assemble to Project Item is consumed, it will both consume the components and output the ATO Item at the Project Location, then immediately consumed the ATO Item from the Project Location.

Got it to work to create the Transfer Order on the Assemble to Project item like you suggested.
