Cannot update phone call activity after create

(0) ShareShare

I am trying to update data in a phone call activity after the call is created.  I plan to use a real time workflow to accomplish this.  Unfortunately, although the workflow works on the update of a field, it gives an error on the phone call activity creation.

At first I thought perhaps updates were not allowed on create, but I tested this with a contact record and it works perfectly.  I am at a loss as to why this will not work with a  phone call activity.  It does not appear to matter what field is updated or to what value, an error is generated.

Have you checked if you have the write permission for this entity?

    Hi John,

This is a known issue with CRM 2011(via SDK) and 2013, when we create a synchronous workflow which should be triggered to update data for Phone Call activity, after record is created but it throws an error when you save the record.

For CRM 2011, it has been targeted to be fixed in UR 16 and for CRM 2013, its under investigation however as a workaround you can use Asynchronous workflow instead of Synchronous.

I was not aware that synchronous workflows were an option in CRM 2011 by any means.  What exactly is the nature of this bug in CRM 2011?

If I were doing this in a plugin, I would typically do it within the transaction and update the target with the new value.

Unfortunately, asynchronous execution is not a viable option.  If it were, I would have used it in the first place as it is more scalable.  I will write a plugin to accomplish this functionality.

Synchronous workflow can be made in CRM 2011 via SDK. After investigation we have found that after UR13, SetDynamicState doesn’t work on Post-operation when a record is created however, a workaround is Instead of Update the state after Post create, we can update StateCode and StatusCode using Pre-Operation stage of execution.

For now, you can write a plugin in CRM 2013 and I will update this thread once resolution/fix for this issue is out.
