crm db update considerations?

Hello - I know MS says that backend updates to the CRM database are not supported.

I can see why this might be the case with primary CRM tables but what about custom fields which CRM stores in the custom base extension table?

Since these are custom fields, updating them through backend updates appears to be low risk.  Obviously the developer is responsible work any plugins, workflows, etc he has created that access the custom field.

But aside from that it seems safe to update these column values through a backend database script.  Do you agree or are there other aspects I'm not considering?

Your argument does make sense but you might also consider what might happen in the future. Meaning Microsoft tries very hard to make sure use the available APIs doesn't break during patches and upgrades (not immediately anyway). With that said, direct database updates might work now but (nothing actually indicating this mind you) the next major release could introduce some large change that might make direct updates in your scenario not be as reliable. At which point you would have to re-engineer your solution. I think in general using the APIs gives you a better chance of getting longer life out of the work you're putting in.

    RE: crm db update considerations?

CRM is a Relational Database and the values shown in UI come from various tables in DB. When updating the Databases manually, there is a big risk of not updating all the related columns to reflect the correct value, which may render the Database in an inconsistent and unusable state so at any cost we should avoid performing direct DB updates to CRM Database.
