Hi:

Many times, I have seen the "Reserve" button in various supply chain transaction screens but never thought about it until now.

Over the years, I have never seen this used or even discussed aside from what appears in knowledgebase articles.

I can see where the Reservation Worksheet can be very useful.

Aside from the Worksheet, however, why use this if the Item Card accounts for quantities on documents anyway? Is the quantity on these documents not already allocated?

In your experience, do many use this feature?

Do any issues arise, from using this in reserving production order components?

If you have inventory and need to reserve a specific lot or a certain quantity for a customer who has placed an order, you should use the Reserve functionality. This will ensure that the goods are set aside for that customer.

If you do not reserve the inventory, it is possible for later orders to be fulfilled first, which means that the product could be shipped to another customer instead of fulfilling the initial order from the customer who has already paid

Hi John,

The reserve quantity is a crucial aspect of inventory management in Business Central or any other ERP system. While many organizations may not use it regularly due to excess inventory or supply chain issues, it becomes highly beneficial when you have multiple salespeople who need to reserve stock for their customers.

Also don't forget the way Business Central designed its separates the role which means if Warehouse Employee does reserve/Undo reserve purchaser or inventory manager won't get updated inventory count.

Many customers do use it, and it also has features such as Auto Reserve and reserved lot. This is very useful.

However, some customers have added some of their own customization. For example, it is not reserved for an order, but for a customer or customer group.

Hope this can give you some hints.
