Trial Balance error – “More rows in the account schedules than expected” (all combinations tested)

Hi all,

We are encountering an issue in Business Central where the Trial Balance page shows the following error:

“The Trial Balance chart is not set up correctly. There are more rows in the account schedules than expected.”

In the client environment, we have tested all configurations of Row and Column Definitions.

Screenshots of the Row Definitions and Column Definitions have been attached for reference.

Would like to check:

  1. Are there specific limitations on row/column definitions when used in the Trial Balance page?
  2. Could this be environment-specific (e.g. data setup or customizations)?
  3. Is there a standard or recommended configuration required for Trial Balance to function correctly?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you.

    Hello,
From the screenshots, the issue is the setup itself: you’re using BUDGET / BUDGET-ACT as the row/column definition for the Trial Balance page. That combination is not a valid standard Trial Balance layout. The Trial Balance page expects a dedicated trial balance row definition with simple G/L account rows, typically posting accounts only, and a standard balance-type column definition such as M-BALANCE or DEFAULT. A budget-style row definition can easily produce the error “There are more rows in the account schedules than expected” because the page/chart expects a simpler structure. So yes, there is effectively a limitation here: not every row/column definition works on the Trial Balance page. It can also be environment-specific if someone changed the default financial reports or a customization points the page to the wrong setup, but based on your screenshots I would first create a clean TB row definition using Insert G/L Accounts filtered to Posting, then test it with M-BALANCE. That is the closest standard/recommended setup from Microsoft.
