ANSI_PADDING off

Posted on by 2,040

I'd like to change the table column length size using the SQL enterprise manager - design table, while I click save it pop up validation warnings

- Warning: One or more existing columns have ANSI_PADDING 'off' and will be re-created with ANSI_PADDING 'on'.

- Warning: The table was created with ANSI_NULLS 'off' and will be re-created with ANSI_NULLS 'on'.

what does it mean? what should I do?

    Lee,

There are a couple of methods depending on modules you own and which field it is. Of course, Extender is the sweetest option, but not always desireable because the user interface is so different. So, do you have access to Modifier? You could put a user-defined string field on the window and then save it to the duos tables. I feel certain that David Musgrave has an example of this on his blog.

What field do you need to be longer? How long?

Use Extender.  Extender will let you create additional fields (not extend the current fields) but the new fields can be larger and can keep the data you need.

There are two versions.  The MS Extender allows the creation of windows (and forms and inquiries, etc) while the eOne eXtender does all of that plus allows the inclusion of logic associated with the windows/forms.  Both are the same product, the eOne is an expanded version.

Contact your partner for information on costs.  It can be installed in a matter of hours.

    Hi Bradley,

The column size existing now is not enough to let me key in all the word that I need.

    Thanks.

    Hi Lee,

Changing the column size in SQL will not increase the size of the field in GP.  What are you trying to accomplish?

    Thanks,

    Bradley

    Hi Leslie,

Any other way to change the column length without crashing the system?

    Thanks.

    Hi Lee,

You should not change the table column length using any tool. If you do, the next time Dynamics attempts to access the table it will throw a 'record length' error and the application will not continue in a satisfactory manner.

Dynamics expects the table to remain exactly the same as was created. You can add indexes without  crashing the system, but that is all.

    Kind regards,

    Leslie
