Copying Company set up information to a new company

I have just recently created a new company in Dynamics GP 10 and am looking for a way to import (or copy) setup information from one existing company to this new one.

Now there is an automated solution in customer source that give me the ability to copy module by module data and report information from an existing company to another company, but i dont need to copy all the data over.

What i need to copy over is such things as the "Chart of Accounts" list from another company.

Is this possible through dynamics GP??

I'm sure someone has a better solution but I'll just give you my thoughts.  I remember Microsoft recently came up with two tools, a Quickbooks Converter and a Rapid Migration tool, can't exactly remember the names, but the latter actually sucked out the setup information from one GP company so you could use it on other companies (but not the transactions).

If I remember correctly, you needed GP 10 and Excel 2007 to use these tools.

In terms of GL accounts or other master records (Cards) personally (due to my lack on knowing any other way) I would use Smartlist on the one company to create an excel file of all the information for G/L accounts and then push it into the other company with Integration Manager.  I'm sure there is a way to copy over tables, but that gets a little sketchy.  For example, a co-worker of mine once wanted to bring in the inventory items from one company to another (it was actually only a test to a live one) and created the SQL statement to copy from one database to the other, but all of the GL accounts were messed up on the cards because this particular table referenced "Account Index" not GL account number.  The account indexes were different in the other company even though they had the same GL accounts.

I always prefer to do things through the user interface as much as possible.

However, it wouldn't suprise me if someone posted here giving you a SQL script that would do what you want.

Integration Manager is the best tool to import chart of Accounts other than anything else. It's quite easy in terms of COA integration. Just bring the COA from the other system in an excel format, import it using IM.

Re: Re: Copying Company set up information to a new company

Well i just checked a forum online to see if anyone else wanted to do this, and they said to use the automated solution tool that i mentioned in my posting.

Is there anyone who has used this before for either GP 9 or GP10...

Its gives options of Data (per module), Reports (per module) and Data & Reports (per module)...Now what does it mean by "Data" are we talking finanical information or Financial Master records as one person mentioned on another website forum...

If anyone has done this before with the automed tool let me know what had to be done

    Thanks

    Slaver,

Automated solutions will work if you want to copy the entire data. In your case, you are just looking to import COA? right. So, You need to use Integration Manager tool to do it for you

Is this what you are using?

Rapid Implementation Tools for Microsoft Dynamics GP 10.0 Feature Pack 1

I did try it in the past but it was on a test system and I just did it to see what it was all about.  It seemed pretty neat but I always thought that it might get partners mad since a lot of the billable hours on a project can come from system configuration.  You should give it a try in a test envirnment and see if it is what you need.

No it was through customer source..

     https://mbs.microsoft.com/customersource/support/selfsupport/automatedsolutions/automatedsolutionsR10.htm

Name of the automated solution was the following:

    Name: Copy Company Setup

Info: Copies all the setup information from one company to another in SQL. You can choose between what module information to send over to the new company. *Note: Due to the potential amount of time this operation takes to complete, it is advised to run this solution during off peak hours.

It lets you slect specific modules to copy, but has  a drop down list that says "What to copy" then gives you 3 options

    1. Data

    2. Report Options

    3. Data and Report Options

Hope that helps explain it a bit better.....

Try that tool I linked to if you have the prerequsites (Excel 2007 and GP 10)  I think it might be just what you need for the setup info.  Plus, you can suck the settings out of the one company and then open the excel templates that it creates and edit them before you push them into the new company.  I found it to be pretty neat when I tried it.

I'm not sure about the automated solution you have there.  Sorry, but I don't really have time to try it out right now.  But having a test system and just giving it a try will probably answer your questions.

I'll probably try it out this weekend, just from what i read on the overview it looks like it will do some of the stuff i want..

Still would be nice to know if anyone has used that automated tool before.

    Thanks

Re: Copying Company set up information to a new company

    Hi,

Just a pointer - when you've managed to setup your base data in a new company make a copy of it and save it as a "template company" which you can use as a starting point in future should the need arise again. Our initial contingency template company has been used several times and has saved us much pain.

    Good luck !

    Chris.

     Thanks for the tip...

I actually ended up using the Automated solution tool through Dynamics customer source and it worked great! So for anyone out there that will work as well

Thanks to all who assisted my questions
