Any way to get a modified report from a DIC file?

Hi there, we recently (finally) went through the migration from Great Plains 7.5 to Dynamics GP 2010.  Our partner, however, didn't talk to us much about modified reports and we lost a couple important ones.

Luckily, we just happened to have .package files for most of them so those imported and work fine with no/minimal tweaking.

That said, we're missing a couple... is there any way to get them out of a GP 7.5 DIC file that we still have?

Thanks,

Dave

Do you still have your GP 7.5 CD? If so, you can restore GP 7.5 to another computer and then export the reports. The reports will be in the REPORTS.DIC file. Now there were significant changes to the underlying database so a 7.5 report may not upgrade to a GP 2010 report.

Hrm, I actually have a system with GP 7.5 still on it (yes to having the CD as well).  Would I be able to go about this idea without having GP 7.5 server anywhere?  Thanks a ton!

Have you attempted to import directly from the reports.dic file in Report Manager in v2010?  I would definetely take a back-up of the v2010 reports.dic file prior to doing this as you may run the risk of running into issues but it is a possible option.

    Your options are this:

    1) Have GP 7.5 someplace that can still connect to a database. If no database, the client will not fire up. If you have your GP 7.5 CD you could try to install it onto a server and/or workstation running SQL Server 2000 and then create a connection.

    2) Take your 7.5 REPORTS.DIC file and try as Mike S. suggests. Make sure you backup your current REPORTS.DIC file just in case.

Which reports are you trying to upgrade?

Before you start - check that the reports will actually upgrade - look for a list of reports that will not upgrade in the upgrade documentation. Since you have moved through a number of versions to get to GP2010 - you may have to upgrade the reports.dic through the same path e.g. upgrade from 7.5 to 9 and from 9 to 10 and from 10 to 2010 or something like that. So you will need to check the upgrade documentation for all of the versions you moved through.

The simplest is to just import the reports from the old dic to the new 2010 dic - some of the reports may be fine and may work with 2010 straight off.

If its SOP Invoice layouts you may have a problem. It might just be easier to remodify the reports. Plus you now have the word templates - o maybe best to just bite the bullet and re-do your reports from scratch.

But the first port of call hs to be your partner. Ask them.

    Best regards,

    Ian.

Here is how you would import reports from one reports dictionary into another:

Navigate to Report Writer: Microsoft Dynamics GP > Tools > Customize > Report Writer

Open the Report Writer window and select the Import button:

    On the Import Reports window:
    1. Select the old REPORTS.DIC file as the Source Dictionary.
    2. Select the reports you want to import into your current dictionary, one at a time.
    3. Select the insert button to move the report into the “Reports to Import” column.
    4. Once all of the reports have been selected, click ‘Import’ to bring the reports into your current dictionary.

    Hi Dave,

For modified reports, you would be looking at REPORTS.DIC and for modified forms it will be FORMS.DIC. Also if the modification is with VBA than you would be paying attention to VBA file.

I would install GP 7.5 in test machine and restore the back up directory and re-export the missing packages, it will probably the simpler way.

Also one of the procedures to upgrade the customizations is through utilities, you can point to old dictionary and than try to update from there.

    Regards,

    Khalid

L Vail:  That worked... somehow I never noticed that ability in Report Writer.  Thank you.

Everyone:  Thank you for the suggestions.
