Create a Separate Sandbox/Development Environment for On-Premise CRM 2015

Posted on by 285

I'm trying to create a separate Sandbox/Development Environment for On-Premise CRM 2015. I've done a bit of research, and all of the articles and other community posts talked about creating another organization as the Sandbox/Development Environment. There are the notes I took:

  1. Allows having a separate “sandbox” database on the same server.

  2. Same server could mean that an issue on the sandbox can cause production to crash. Fighting for resources.

  3. Requires an “enterprise” license.

Because of point number 2, I'm skeptical about this approach and am wondering if there is a way to create this Sandbox/Development Environment on an independent server for safety and load reasons. Does the organization approach support this? Is there another method?

That is correct. You can follow the articles below for instructions.

    technet.microsoft.com/.../jj612874.aspx

    community.dynamics.com/.../step-by-step-setup-dynamics-crm-server

These articles already assume that SQL Server is installed, so make sure that you pre-install it before running setup.

    Hope this helps.

If you actually do have additional servers/virtual machines, there might be another option...

You have the option of installing a separate CRM Server and separate SQL Server.

Regarding the licensing, that is not completely accurate. If you already have a production server, and you are planning to use this environment for development/testing/demonstration, you don't need to get an enterprise license, but you would need to have an MSDN subscription for it. You can get a 90-day trial license if you don't have MSDN.

The MSDN platform subscription is probably the cheapest way to go if you don't have an active MSDN subscription.

Make sure you check the licensing options for demo servers...

So I would just go to MSDN, select the Dynamics CRM Server 2015 product, download the software from there, install it on a new windows server machine. Install an SQL database on the same machine, connect the two, and I'm good to go? Is there a guide or tutorial I can follow for this?

    Hello,

No, to have sandbox environment in different place you will have to install brand new instance of CRM.
