Advanced Find thinks a field 'Contains Data' when it is blank

Posted on by 12,159

If I do an Advanced Find to determine if a particular field 'Contains Data' it returns all records whether the field contains data or not.

A few things to note about this field: a. it is a read-only custom text field that is updated via a Scribe integration with our ERP b. I do not know when this started as it used to work correctly without issue.

Very perplexing.

    Thousands.

I queried the SQL directly and indeed, rather than showing NULL the field is just blank. I am attempting to update them now via Scribe to try and clear them of any spaces or characters.

How many records are there in question? You could write a C# console application to clear the field on all the necessary records.

Thanks Wayne. How would I AF against spaces? And once I determine that to be the case, what would be the best way to clear them? via Workflow?

I would bet it's getting either a space ' ' or it's getting a nonprintable character '/n/p' You might want to advanced find against spaces, or add some logic to the Scribe integration to null out any data that's just spaces and nonprintable characters.

Also, check your ERP data and clean that up as well.  I've seen that kind of stuff happen especially when data from old migrations are still used.  Goldmine used to be really bad about having nonstandard character returns and the like that would just gum up apparently blank fields.
