Cannot start Dexterity SCCS service

For the life of me I cannot get this DSCCS service started.  I have tried reinstalling, looking in the registry, using Process Monitor, rebooting, all to no avail.

I already have this installed on my box, and other developers have installed it successfully on their boxes.  Now when trying to get it working on a new VM (Windows 7 x64) for a new developer, for some weird reason it will not start.  The event log is of no use.

At this point I am totally stumped and we are now completely stuck as without the service running, we will not be able to check in and out code.

Has anyone seen this and are there any pre-requisites that I might be missing (I have TFS/VS 2010 and Dexterity loaded and setup)?

    Hi,

    Open Services window,

right click on Microsoft Dexterity SCCS properties

    go to LogOn Tab

    select This Account radio button,

enter your domain name and username

    enter password and reconfirm it.

    and click on OK

    now try restarting the services.

    Regards,

    Hi,

Myself had the same error long time back. I have tried many ways but not able to resolved. Finally I have  uninstalled the GP 2010 DSCCS and installed the GP 10 DSCCS setup. Then I have tried, It was worked fine. I don't know the reason but DSCCS is not version based. it will compatible with all GP versions.

    Hi,

I agree on Mani even i got the same issue, tried to start the service could not, then downgrade to the lower as previous version to GP 10 DSCCS then it was running fine.

I just raised ticket to microsoft about this issue.

Great :(  I am on GP2013!  Having to use a GP 10 version of DSCCS would seem rather strange, but I'll give it a try and see what happens.  Thank you for your reply.

Well that didn't work :(  Since we are using TFS, that is only supported in DSCCS since GP2010 and I tried various versions of that (GP2010 and 2013) and none of them will start up.  The GP10 one started, but of course that is totally useless since it doesn't connect to TFS.

I have a ticket in with Microsoft and hopefully they can suggest something as I am now out of ideas and we really need to get this developer connected.

Thanks all for your suggestions.  Anyone else has anything to add, please feel free.

    Thanks,

    Geoff

OK, after digging through process monitor logs of both successful and unsuccessful service startings, I have managed to resolve the issue.  I cannot be 100% sure that this is the same issue that everyone may encounter, but hopefully this can point out the pitfalls.

Before trying to start the service, you MUST have VS loaded on that machine and have created a workspace for your user pointing to a particular location.  Then when installing the DSCCS or from using the Control Panel app to edit the setup information, make sure the folder being pointed to is exactly the same folder as defined as a workspace.  I haven't checked but I would assume the same thing would apply if using VSS.  Now when starting the service itself, you have to make sure it is running with the same credentials as the user who is using that workspace folder.  The service should now start successfully and everything will be good.

To summarize, you must match the user running the service and the folder specified in the DSCCS setup with the user and folder created in the TFS workspace (or VSS I guess).  You cannot seem to use Local System as the one running the service.

The problem may of course be more complicated than this with other issues as well, but this is what resolved the issue for me.  Hopefully this may help anyone else who comes up against this.

Now if only they came up with a cross-domain solution ... ;)

    Thanks,

    Geoff
