The common data service (CDS)

Hi,

I have some questions regarding the common data service (CDS).  Are the structure for the CDS for analytics the same as the CDS for apps? Also, are the other Microsoft platforms such as the CRM built on top of the same database (CDS)?

    Answering your questions in reverse:-

    2) CDS (for Apps) is the foundation of Model Driven PowerApps which itself is the core functionality (Accounts, Activities, Contacts, workflows, plugins) of Dynamics CRM / 365 CE. As of version 9 the Sales, Customer Service, PSA and Field Service applications within Dynamics 365 are additional solutions / packages built upon a Model Driven PowerApp.

    1) CDS for analytics is built for data warehouse use. I don't think anyone except those under NDA know exactly how it works but www.sensdat.com/.../common-data-service-for-analytics-cds-a has an overview that may help...

Great answer! Are the several CDS databases or only one? For example does Dynamics talk to the same database as the CDS for apps or are there several databases?

CDS (for Apps) is a transactional system and there is only 1 database for every Dynamics 365 / Model Driven PowerApp organisation / instance.

CDS for Analytics is likely to be a separate database (it is after all a data warehouse designed to pull records in from multiple different sources)...

    That clarified things! Thanks again!
