You can upgrade to latest version before migrate it and it required you to do some checking to ensure your solution is compatible with online version.
EG
1. SSRS with SQL query
- you have to convert into fetchxml

Yes, it's very possible but certainly not a click-thru process. Some things to consider when evaluating and estimating are: long running plug-ins (online limit is 2 minutes); reporting (online only allows fetchxml reports); ISV solutions (are you using an ISV solution that doesn't work in the cloud?); and most importantly of all...data migration (large databases with attachments, notes, and lots of activity records and be challenging and take time to migrate. Look into Kingsway Soft or Scribe to help with this).
