Currently I have field names that need to be changed because of spelling and punctuation. Since the field is locked from me changing the name, how can I update the field name without having to create a new field?

You can't change the name of the field, but you can change the Display Name. You will basically have to recreate the field.

On the form that you have displayed above, you can click on the Edit button, and that will open the field properties. There you can change the Display Name and the Description (which will be displayed as the tooltip of the field).

You can also go to Settings -> Customizations -> Customize My System (or Settings -> Solutions -> Select your solution), from there, select the entity that contains the fields that you want to modify, expand the entity, and click on fields.

Find the field that you want to make changes to and change the display name.

Make sure to Publish your customizations after you make the changes:

Settings -> Solutions -> Publish All Customizations.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi,

You can't change the schema name of the field however as suggested above, you can change the display name & description.

If you are starting on your project and haven't done much customization, then I would suggest to re-create the field as it would be easy to do this in the begining rather than latter as the dependency grows.

    Hope this helps

Thanks! Yes its about to be a headache for me, I rather do it the right way the first time. My main concern is reporting and system views keeping labels consistent across the board.
