Stuck processes while using SmartLists

Hey guys,

I'm having some issues with couple of DynamicsGP users at work. Both of them are heavy smart list users, and both get the same error from time to time. The error is the following:

  • SmartList stops refreshing, does not return new data
  • While trying to exit GP, they get the "Processes are currently being run that cannot be deleted" message.
When I go to the Process Monitor, it's always the same processes stuck in there, and they are repeated multiple times
  • ASI_Explorer_Clear_List_View_Ex(1)
  • ASI_Update_Processing_Message(1)
  • ASI_Explorer_Display_Columns(1)
  • ASI_Receivables_Transaction_Get_Records_Background(1)
  • ASI_Update_Stop_Message(1)
I can not find a resolution for this problem for the life of me. The only crude solution I found so far, is to close out of GP through task manager, and restart it like that, but it seems like a backwards way of fixing things. I'd rather address the problem, than keep dealing with the same issue again and again. Any suggestions?

How many records are in the SmartLists they're trying to run?  Are they out of the box SmartLists or SmartList Builder lists?

These are SmartList Builder lists. The thing is though, they weren't always a problem. It's just lately they've been starting to hang up, and the worst part is, it's not consistent, so I can't really troubleshoot it either. The processes tend to hang up sometimes when the accounting posts batches, but that's a different issue, and different processes are hanging up. It mostly happens during SmartList usage.

Was just wondering if you managed to resolve the above issue?

The company I work for is experiencing exactly the same problem, with the same processes causing the issue.

We recently upgraded GP2010 to Service Pack 3 from Service Pack 1 and the problem started then.

As you said the only way around it was to kill the dynamics process from with Task Manager.

You seem to be the only other person out there with this issue so any info would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Mark, have you tried rolling back to GP 2010 SP 1 to fix this issue?

    Hi Replicar,

It might be happening because SmartList requires a continuous block of memory that is large enough to perform whatever search you have asked of it. Your machine may have tons of memory, but SmartList needs a single continuous block.

Could your heavy SmartList users switch over to refreshable Excel reports instead of going to SmartList every time?

    Kind regards,

    Leslie

It seems silly to not use the system capability, especially when we paid a pretty penny for GP. I could possibly take the sql script and stick it into Excel, but it seems like a way around the problem, rather than a real solution. In my opinion doing such is not any better than having to close out GP through Task Manager.

Haven't tried rolling back and doubt this would be an option, reason for going to SP3 was to use  an AIR module (Advanced Inventory Replenishment). All I know is it worked fine until SP3.

Also I agree with you above, Smart Lists are there to be used and as I've said it has worked for years prior to the upgrade.

Currently talking to our Dynamics Support Centre at the moment to get help on this, shall post if they find anything out that could help you also.

    Hi again,

Can't disagree with you there, I thought upgrades were supposed to be 'up' grades.

One thing to note, is that the SQL view that feeds the SmartList already exists in an Excel Report that came with GP. These 'integrated Excel reports' are also launchable (is that a word?) from within the user interface.

Hopefully there's a real solution out there for you.

    Kind regards,

    Leslie

My client is experiencing the same issue - GP2013 - 12.00.1343 new installation, just started happening.  SQL Server 2008 R2.  I logged into same machine in GP as 'sa' no issue, logged in as end user and smartlists returned no data.  Anyone any thoughts?

    Thank you,

    Lisa

    Lisa,

Our user is able to retrieve the information if GP has been restarted. It seems like your issue is not the same, since data does not get retrieved after reboot, or change of login.
