D365 consists of many applications, such as Finance and Operations, Sales or Business Central. You're asking in D365 general forum, therefore it's not clear which product you have in mind. Please add this information.

    Hi,

In Dynamics 365 Business Central, the Item Description field typically has a character limit of 100 characters. This limit is defined in the table schema and cannot be changed through standard configuration.

    Options to work around this:

    1. Use the Extended Text Feature:

      • Navigate to the item card and use the "Extended Texts" action.
      • This allows you to add longer descriptions that can be included on documents like sales orders and invoices.
    2. Custom Extension:

      • If you need longer descriptions directly on the item card, a developer can create a table extension to increase the field length or add a new custom field.
    3. Use Attributes or Notes:

      • For additional descriptive information, consider using Item Attributes or Notes fields.

Let me know if you'd like help setting up extended texts or designing a custom extension!

    Best regards,
    Daniele

    Hello ,

Sorry you cannot change the size or character limit of any base field of business central:

    Other options :

    1. You need to create a custom field and use this everywhere you want.

    2. Create a new field and split the description into two fields such that BASE FIELD+ CUSTOM field description = Overall high length . In this manner you can have both BASE and CUSTOM functionality of description

Hi, This is something that can only be adjusted by Microsoft; we cannot modify the length of standard fields.
In addition, Microsoft has previously added lengths on a large scale, as shown below. If you require this, you can submit an idea to Microsoft.

    Thanks

    hi
You cannot increase the character limit of default fields in Business Central. If you need more space, the proper approach is to create a custom field with the required length through an extension. This ensures data integrity while meeting your business requirements without altering standard fields.

You cannot increase length of Standard Feilds of Business Central . You can extend Item table and add new field of max length 2000.

** If you introduce new feild then you need to write script to flow in all related item Transactions and any subsequent MIS reports and Document Repots  . You have to use subscriber events to flow fields in all type of transactions based on your business.

    Example ::
Sales , Purchase , ITem Journal , Warehouse , Service lines, Project lines , Output journal , Assembly lines ,

We did it for our many customers for many standard tables . And its working fine .

If you feel answer is helpful, please verify the answer .
