Base Unit of Measure in manufacturing module

My company is currently trying to implement the manufacturing module for our bills of materials.  Is there any way that our BOM could be in "cases" but our base unit of measure in "pounds"?  We get all of our information by the "case" from the plant but for all of our costing and sales purposes we need our inventory in pounds.  Could someone please advise.  Thanks!

    Dana,

When you set up the Item Card for an Item, you have to pick a UOM Schedule for the item.  This UOM Schedule defines the BASE UOM, so in this instance you would pick CASE, and then put in conversions for pounds - you'll want to ensure you configure enough decimal places to support the accuracy of your conversions as well.

Also from the item card go to menu in the top right hand corner of the card you can navigate to Purchasing and Price Lists.  In Purchasing and Price Lists you can configure the default Purchasing UOM and the Default Selling UOM respectively.  These Units of Measure will need to be listed on your item's default UOM Schedule and have the relevant conversions configured to the BASE UOM.

In the Bill of Materials Card, you can define specific UOM for any components added if that UOM appears in the UOM Schedule assigned to the item (i.e. Pounds, Pieces, Cases, etc.).

Here is a solid post on configuring UOM Schedules:

Harry has provided; as usual, a comprehensive illustration. I do have a question though regarding the case and pound conversion or relation.

Do you have a fixed Case-Pound conversion rate for all the SKU ? If yes, then one unit of measurement schedule will be enough. Otherwise, you will have to define several unit of measurement schedules according to the conversion rates, or find a suitable relations among the levels of the unit of measurement schedule. Allow me to explain through a simple example:

Supposing you have two different packaging types for the SKUs. In the first one, the case holds 6 pounds, while in the other the case holds 12 pounds. In this essence, you can choose among creating either one UOM schedule or two as follows:

Scenario One | Two different unit of measurement schedules

    UOM Schedule: Case06
    Base: Pound
    UOM: Case = 6 Pound

Another UOM Schedule is setup as follows:
    UOM Schedule: Case12
    Base: Pound
    UOM: Case = 12 Pound

Scenario Two | One unit of measurement schedule with two conversions

    UOM Schedule: Case
    Base: Pound
    UOM: Case06 = 6 Pound

    UOM: Case12 = 2 Case06

    UOM: Case12 = 12 Pound

To distinguish the different between these two scenarios, you may refer to a previous post in which there is a much in-depth analysis >>  unit of measure selection in sales order processing

By now, you do have the know-how and technique to find what is suitable for your environment

    Your feedback is highly appreciated,

Outside of the regular GP UoM stuff that Harry has covered...

You may want to consider a solution from Myridas called Catchweights.
