How to set the status reason from workflow...

Hello,

I am trying to set a field called Status Reason on an entity called Sales Incentives.  The workflow should look back to the Opportunity to see what pipeline phase the record is set to.  So if it is 1, 2, 3, or 4 it should set the Sales Incentive record upon creation of this record to Active.  When I try to do a workflow to complete this task, I don't get the option to update the Status reason field, it just doesn't show up.  Does anyone know why this would happen?  or is there another way that I can set this properly?

    You can use a Change Status step for this, rather than an Update step

    Wish I saw this post before wasting a lot of time..

    What is the rationale for not allowing to update the status reason with the Update step??
