Can Dynamics GP be installed as a Virtual Machine?

Hello all,

Ive been looking around today and cant seem to find an explicit answer.

We are in the process of upgrading the server that GP sits on and the question of VM came up. Is it possible/advisable?

If so, are the requirements different than the bare metal requirements on MS.com?

Thanks!

Hi DJ, we have a few customers running in virtual enviornments. GP runs fine. Basically the SQL Server is Virtualised eithre in VMWare or HyperV. No real isues. Don't think there are any issues with SSRS etc. - at least none I have come across so far.

Once the server is virtualised, you just install MSSQL as per normal. You can detach and re-attach databases ifyour server is currently physical. New ODBC for the workstations obviously.

Just like Ian, we have seen this done successfully at multiple client sites.  A few considerations:

    - Make sure your version of GP is supported in a virtual environment - this support only started with GP 10.0.

    - There is a KB article about support for a virtual environment: https://mbs.microsoft.com/knowledgebase/KBDisplay.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;937629.

    - There is also a wizard for finding whether your virtual environment is supported: http://www.windowsservercatalog.com/svvp.aspx?svvppage=svvpwizard.htm.

    Victoria:

    Hi -

Does this mean that GP v9 will not run in a VM environment or that it probably will run in such an environment but Microsoft will not support the results?

Hi Sandy, it will run, we have done this many times for testing and development and have not had any issues.  But it will not be supported by MS, which is usually a major consideration for any production environment.

Hi Sandy, we have a customer running GP9 on VMWare! (try finding a statement of support for that combination!!). Everything runs fine. No issues with the install etc. Best to test it first though. The client had to move in this direction and resistence was futile. We tested long and hard and couldn't find anything untoward. If you can avoid this easily by upgrading to 10 and using HyperV, then thats the route you should probably go.
