Hi all,

Does anyone know if it's possible to start using stock keeping units when there are already inventory transactions/item ledger entries on the items?
Or is this something that should be set up from the beginning?
I have the same question (0)

There is no issue creating Stockkeeping Units after Item Ledgers exist for a given Item/Location combination.  If you are using Planning, just know your suggestions may change as the system now has more information to base its suggestion on, and at the same time you now have better control over those suggestions.

    Hello,

Yes, you can start using Stockkeeping Units (SKUs) even after inventory transactions or item ledger entries exist.

SKUs allow you to define item-specific data (like replenishment, planning, and costing) for different locations or variants, and they can be added at any time during your inventory lifecycle.

SKU has nothing to do with the ledgers, ledgers will come into picture if you do something critical like deletion  of item, change of costing methods and all. For SKU it's all good to go at any point in time as you can have a new location and variant for an item you have been using for a while.

If you are concerned, try it out first in a testing company. As other experts have mentioned, unlike Lot No., etc., there are no restrictions.

    Thanks.

Yes, you can start using Stockkeeping Units (SKUs) even if there are already inventory transactions or item ledger entries. SKUs work as extensions of the item master at specific locations or variants. Just create SKUs for the items as needed, and Business Central will begin using them for planning and transactions at those levels moving forward.

Yes, in Dynamics 365 Business Central, it is indeed possible to start using Stockkeeping Units (SKUs) even after inventory transactions or item ledger entries already exist for the items. However, there are some important considerations and best practices to ensure a smooth transition:
    What You Can Do
    1. Create SKUs for Existing Items:
      • You can create Stockkeeping Units for items that already have transactions.
      • SKUs are location- and variant-specific records that allow you to manage planning parameters, replenishment, safety stock, etc., per location or variant.
    2. No Impact on Historical Transactions:
      • Existing Item Ledger Entries (ILEs) remain tied to the Item Card, not the SKU.
      • SKUs are used going forward for planning, replenishment, and reporting.
    3. You Can Use SKUs Selectively:
      • You don’t need to create SKUs for all items—only for those where location-specific planning or control is needed.

    Important Considerations
    1. Planning Worksheets & Replenishment:
      • Once SKUs are in use, planning logic (MRP/MPS) will prioritize SKU-level settings over Item Card settings.
      • Ensure that Reorder Points, Lead Times, Safety Stock, etc., are correctly set on the SKU.
    2. Inventory Setup:
      • If you use location tracking, ensure that SKUs are created for each location where the item is stocked.
      • If you don’t create a SKU for a location, the system will fall back to the Item Card settings.
    3. Reporting:
      • Some reports (e.g., Inventory Availability by Location) will show SKU-level data.
      • Others may still aggregate at the item level unless customized.
    4. No Automatic SKU Creation:
      • You must manually create SKUs or use a batch job (Create Stockkeeping Units) to generate them based on combinations of items and locations.

Recommended Steps to Start Using SKUs
    1. Run the “Create Stockkeeping Units” batch job:
      • Go to Stockkeeping Units → Process → Create Stockkeeping Units.
      • Select the items and locations you want to generate SKUs for.
    2. Review and update planning parameters on the new SKUs.
    3. Test planning and replenishment using a few items before rolling out broadly.
    4. Train users to check SKU cards instead of Item Cards for planning-related data
