Change Opportunity default name from Topic to Account

Is there an easy way to change the the way an Opportunity is named so that it is based on Account name rather than Topic by default?  Appreciate it is pulling through the primary field which in the case of the Opportunity is the Topic field but just wondered if there is a way to modify that through customization - have taken a look but can't see anything obvious...

Any advice appreciated!

    Hello,

By default lookup show information based on the primary field, so when ever you will reference opportunity it will show topic field only. if you required you do custom development to make it combination of other fields using java script.

    Check this: arpitmscrmhunt.blogspot.ae/.../how-to-change-display-text-of-lookup.html

You could easily copy the name of the Account to the Topic field so it shows up when the Opp is referenced elsewhere, and use a custom field for a short description.

I am not sure that this helps though, because it just makes it hard for users to tell on Opportunity from another (they all show the Account name as the primary field).

Another option would be to copy the Account name to a custom text field called eg "Customer name". You could include this as a Quick Find field, so that when you search for Opportunities you can easily search by customer name (in a search or a lookup field).

What exactly is the problem you are facing that you are trying to fix? That might make it easier for us to suggest the best approach.

You would need to create a custom plugin to run as an on-load event for the Opportunity form. This would need to call upon the Parent Account and populate the form with the relevant name. You could do this if you have relatively good knowledge of C# and/or JScript. I personally don't.

By doing so, and not knowing your exact environment it's hard to say for sure, you would eliminate the ability to differentiate between multiple opportunities regarding the same account.

In short, doing this is not advised. The opportunities views can all be modified to show you Parent Account names clearly enough and doing this will result in a list of opportunities in a view (such as a quick-view of opportunities on the account card) all with the same name.

Thanks very much for the responses - I am redesigning the Opportunity form and the request for the change was more for aesthetics (displaying the company the opportunity relates to in the header area rather than a long text string looks neater) than a particularly practical application.

The reward in this case does not seem to justify the effort involved although copying the Account name to the Topic field and adding in a custom field for the topic then playing around with the views will do the trick if it's a must-have rather than a nice-to have...

Thank you again - appreciate all the ideas.
