sql server express 2005 does not finish installing

On a new Windows 7 client back office machine I have installed RMS 2.0 with SP 1, 2, & 3.  During the install of 2.0, SQL Express 2005 did not completely install and gave this error message "Requested operation require an OLE DB session object, which is not supported by the provider.  Source ADODB. command update time card".

I then installed the backward compatibility file from the Microsoft website per information I had found about this on the web.  I then got this error message "2147467259 Connection Open, SQL server does not exist or access denied.  I have gone to the server machine and shared all files to all users and gave the users read/write capability.  I made sure the two machines could see each other on the network.

I then followed the instructions in article 862104 "SQL Server does not exist or access denied" error message when trying to connect to the SQL Server in the Store Operations Administrator.  TCP/IP and Named Pipes are chosen on both machines and I have followed all of the instructions in this article, but I still cannot initially connect to the database of the server from the client machine.  The server is also Windows 7.  I have set the name of the database to the server machine IP address in the Administrator on the client and pinged the server and they each see each other.

The error I got after I did all of these items above is "error 2147217843 MS Ole DB Provider for SQL Server" or something to that affect.  I am stumped as to how to get this client machine working with the RMS database.  I know it is something simple probably, but I am out of ideas and don't find any other information when I search this site or the internet.  I have looked at the SQL error logs and do see some statements which appear to be errors.  Email me and I will send them to review.

    My suggestions.

    1. Try temporarily disabling any firewall on the sql server pc if it has any firewall running. SQL server does not communicate with file sharing, you don't need to have any files shared for other pc's to be able to connect.

    2. Try to connect to sql from on the server itself. Does it work from there or do you have other computers that are connected?

Try these and post back, hopefully someone can come up with a fix to your problem.

    Thank you. TimB

There are two pos computers, one acting as the 'server'.  The server is running RMS fine. It's the 2nd one that won't connect to the first.  No virus protection or Windows Firewall is running on either.  Both are using Windows 7.  I thought it was a permissions issue, but I set permissions to allow all users to access the database.  However, Win 7 has security I am not used to, so it is possible I am just missing how to allow access to the server.

You said that while installing sql server or RMS you got an error message? You could try uninstalling everything and then run the install file again as administrator. Right click the setup file and click "Run as adminstrator". That's what has to be done on a lot of programs with win 7.

It also has been noted that UAC needs to be turned off in Windows 7 to run RMS.

    Marc,

Thank you for this, but I don't think it is the answer either.  I have fully uninstalled SQL 2005 and RMS and re-installed it by right clicking on the RMS install file and chose "run as administrator".  I also installed SQL Express 2005 SP3 right after the RMS install.  Now the error message I got stated  "ASP.Net Version Registration Requirement (warning). ASP.Net Version Registration Requirement failed to find the ASP.Net Version Registration with Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS).

I checked the machine and it is a 64 bit Windows 7 operating system.  I tried looking up the ASP.Net error message, but didn't find any particular information that was helpful.

When I start the RMS administrator and try to log into the other computer on the network that has the RMS database, I get this error message "Error 2147217843 Login Failed for User "sa".  I also get this message "native error 18456"  and "SQL state 42000" and this "ASPNET_REGiis.exe is not on this machine."   I have set the sa password as just the number 1.  Is there possibly a password rule that does not allow this single digit password?

    Lois,

Sounds like you are attempting to install the 32 bit version of SQL 2005 Express with Advanced Services on a 64bit.  If you _really_ want to do this, go here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934162

But why would you install a discontinued product (SQL2k5) on a new 64 bit machine?

Install the 64 bit version of SQL 2k8 Express R2 84 bit here; http://www.microsoft.com/express/Database/InstallOptions.aspx  You really only need the database version for RMS.  Do the other 64 bit versions if you need too.

Install a new copy, accepting all of the defaults,  About 8 screens in, it will ask for Windows Authentication or Mixed Mode, select Mixed Mode and enter your password to use.

You will also need to download the SQL2k5 Backward Compatibility Components here; http://tinyurl.com/2bxgf3z  get the x64 bit version.  Of this package, you only need to install the SQL-DMO part.

Now install the RMS, when it takes you to about the 4th screen in, it asks to install or skip.  You want to skip.

Then you need to go into the Network Client Utility, move Named Pipes and TCP/IP to the right side, then click the alias tab and add your server's name or IP address while selecting Named Pipes.

If you need to share this database, you need to go into the All Programs | SQL 2k8 Server R2 | Configuration Tools

    Jeff,

I did everything you said, I think, and I am still unable to get RMS to let me log into the RMS Administrator and open even a database on the computer.  It won't, of course, let me open the database on the master computer.  I am stumped.  I have searched everywhere on the internet for the installation instructions for RMS 2.0 and the SPs on a machine with Windows 7  64 bit.   I think I have spent 10 -15 hours searching for this, answers to why I am getting the error messages I get and it has been futile.

Here is what I tried from your message above and what I saw on the screens.

    1. I uninstalled RMS and SQL 2005.

    2. I went to the SQL website above and downloaded the file SQLEXPRWT_64_ENV.  I think this is the correct file.  You just said to download the one for RMS, but I didn't know which one it was, since there were 3 or 4.

    3. I installed the above file and it said SQL 2008 installed successfully.

    4. I chose mixed mode during the install and assigned a password that I wrote down.

    5. I downloaded the SQL 2005 backward compatibility file named SQLServer2005_BC_x64 and installed it.  There were no errors at installation.

    6. I then went to try and find the Network Client Utility in SQL.  There wasn't one in the program group SQL or anywhere else that I could find.  I routed through all of the options in SQL 2008 R2 and SQL 2008 and found a couple of places where I could set Named Pipes and TCP/IP, but I do now know if what I did was correct.  The result did say that these two protocols were enabled.  Shared Files was also enabled.

    7. I then tried RMS Adminstrator and I got this error "DBNETLIB Connection Open   SQL Server does not exist or access denied. "  I stopped and started SQL Server.  I rebooted the computer.  I still got the same message.  I then tried the RMS Admin again and I think I got a different message this time.

When I pulled up the RMS Administrator the old sa password still had one *asterisk in it, which should have been the old password of "1".  I tried this password and my new sa password, but I still got the same error message as I stated in 7 above.

I also installed Windows 7 update per KB2524375.  Otherwise, the software on this machine seems to be up to date.

As I stated before, RMS is running with SQL 2005 on the master machine of this 2 machine peer to peer network, which is also running Windows 7.

I am fully stumped.  I am not an SQL or Windows certified person and I am out of options as to where to look for answers on how to install RMS on Windows 7.  I need to find this information out so I can install it on other machines that my other clients have.

    Any help is appreciated.

Try this.  Turn off all firewalls. Use Windows cleanup utility to remove all instances of MSXML to let the SQL Express re-install MSXML. Reinstall SQL Express after you do this. Make sure you are using an IP address or computer name for the connection and not ".".  We have lots of people with your configuration with no issues.  One of the problems you encountered was putting SQL 2008 on first which bypasses all the backward compatibility components that RMS requires. if you start with SQL 2005 versions, you wont have that issue.  Search Microsoft and find the SQL 2005 Backward compatibility software and install that. Somewhere along the line here you will be able to connect. There are too many variables for me to point out the exact thing you need to fix.

On the server, check the windows firewall and turn it off.  There are a bunch of knowledge based articles on what to open up to make it work.  So get it working then lock it down.
