Open an email activity in Outlook from CRM 2015 or CRM Online

I have a client who would like to open emails in Outlook instead of CRM.

Why? Because some people just like the look and feel of Outlook better than CRM....

I have had a look at this blog post: https://community.dynamics.com/crm/b/crmpowerobjects/archive/2013/08/09/open-an-email-activity-in-outlook-from-dynamics-crm but cannot get it to work on my 2015 test environment.

Does anyone have a solution on how to get emails to pop in an Outlook window?

The emails could be any saved/tracked email in CRM - not just the ones they are owner of.

I would like to be able to do this both in a CRM Online organisation and in a CRM 2015 On Premise organisation.

Kind regards

Marianne Christensen

AFIK the script on the PowerObjects post uses ActiveX, which requires IE. It *should* open in Outlook since it calls IE to render pages. If it is not, make sure you have your CRM sites in the "Local Intranet" zone of IE. I'm looking to do something similar, will let you know how it goes!

Hi Marianne, I have the same requirement and wondering if you got around to get this working. I am looking to open the CRM email in outlook, so the user can continue editing in outlook if required. Appreciate some pointers on this. Thanks.

    Hi

    Sorry for the late reply.

I am not looking for a way to track an email in Outlook. The scenario is:

An email has been tracked in Outlook by User A.

User A deletes the email i Outlook.

Some time later user A finds the tracked email i CRM eg. under the Contact. He would like to be able to click the email and have it open in Outlook.

    or

User B finds the tracked email i CRM - and regardless of whether it still exists in User A's Inbox, she would like to open it and forward it. She would like it to pop open in an Outlook window.

I know that this can be done directly in CRM. And everything will be tracked. CRM wise it is neater to do it in CRM.

But the users (A + B) just really like Outlook. They can only work when an email is displayed in Outlook. The buttons are all where they are used to having them. The formatting options are better. The attatchment of a file can be done by drag-and-drop.

I know it is not a OOTB possibility. So I am asking if anyone has found a working method for opening an email activity from CRM in Outlook and transferring the data from the different CRM fields to the according Outlook fields.

    Hi Marianne,

In order to do what you are looking to achieve, you would need CRM client for Outlook, which basically mean accessing CRM from within Outlook.

You would need to install CRM client for Outlook according to the suitable CRM version on every user's machine who want to access CRM and the emails from Outlook.
