ITEM#, LOT#, AND BIN RELATIONSHIP

IN OUR BUSINESS WE WILL CARRY 900+ SKUS A YEAR,WITH 800+ OF THEM SPECIFIC LOT TRACKED, A GOOD DEAL OF THEM WITH MORE THAN ONE LOT#.  WE HAVE A SIMPLE WAREHOUSE SET UP -  REQUIRE PUT AWAY, REQUIRE PICK, BIN MANDATORY.  IN THE PUT AWAY DOCUMENT A RELATIONSHIP IS BUILT OR FIXED BETWEEN THE ITEM, THE SPECIFIC LOT#, AND THE STORAGE BIN.  WHEN SELLING THE ITEMS, THAT FIXED RELATIONSHIP IS NOT OBVIOUS.  IF YOU PICK A SPECIFIC LOT, THE PROGRAM DOES NOT LIMIT PICK FROM BINS TO THE BINS THAT CONTAIN ONLY THAT LOT.  RATHER, ALL BINS WITH THE ITEM NUMBER ARE AVAILABLE FOR CONSIDERATION.  IF I PICK A SPECIFIC BIN FIRST AND THEN MY ITEM TRACKING LINES, THE BIN DOES NOT LIMIT THE ITEM TRACKING LINES TO ONLY WHAT IS IN THAT PARTICULAR BIN, BUT ALL LINE TRACKING LINES AVAILABLE ACCORDING TO ITEM NUMBER ARE SHOWN.  THIS LEADS TO ERRORS AND SOME DISAPPOINTING LOT TRACKING RESULTS.  IS THERE A WAY TO MAINTAIN THE RELATIONSHIP BUILT IN THE INVENTORY PUT AWAY SO THAT ONLY APPROPRIATE LOT/BIN COMBINATIONS SHOW IN THE SALES ORDER?  IS THERE A SET UP THAT ALLOWS THE ITEM LOT# TO BE VIEWED IN A BIN?

THANKS FOR YOUR HELP.

that needs a customization. cannot be done in standard.

Thank you for such a quick response.  Can you tell me - would the customization needed be an added feature, or rather a breaking of the bin hierarchy in the program?

What is D365 Business Central definition of lot tracking?  When it is up to the user to rebuild without prompts the item/lot/bin relationship from the Put Away into a SO, errors are bound to occur.  These errors will affect lot tracing outcomes.  Am I missing something here?

Have you looked into the possibility of using reservations? If you use reservation you can bind the warehouse transactions to a spesific LOT and the picking document will the spesify the bin that you should go and pick your items from.

Is this different than having the Customer Card default to Shipping, Reserve, Always?

It is the same kind of reservation i am talking about. But the reservations can be spesific or non-spesific.

You can read more about it in this link:

    docs.microsoft.com/.../design-details-item-tracking-and-reservations

And i am happy to elaborate more if you have more detailed questions.

So I gave this a try.  I first selected my sales line item, then selected a specific lot#.  Returned to menu, Line, Function, Reserve; asked if I wanted to Reserve specific serial or lot#; the particular lot I specified on sales line showed up (not all that were available, which was good); selected OK and the Reservation card came into view;  closed it and came back to SO; went to select Bin and all three bins that hold the product are there for the picking; only one bin has that particular lot; a bit disappointed.  In the program we are giving up, the bin options would have been only those that held the particular lot chosen, not all bins that held the item number.  I guess with the specific reservation made, the program will adjust out the right lot# even if the wrong bin was entered - either by error or default.  I know the picker has the ability to edit bin, but it seems to me that it is a bit prone to error.  For my test, I deliberately chose wrong bin and posted pick list with wrong bin. Sure enough, the item lot tracking is correct, but the quantities per bin are not.  Seems problematic to me.

Thanks for your interest.  It was a good document to read.

I find this case very intersting. Working with a case that is very similar to yours. I will try and replicate your example to determine how much customization it will take to achive the behavior we want to see.

first select the bin in the lines, should then show all bins with that item, then add item tracking line(s).

Sorry for the late response.  This does not accomplish narrowing down the options, which is my goal.  When a specific bin is chosen, the lot tracking options will still include lots not stored in the selected bin.  When a specific lot is chosen first, the bin options will include all bins with the same item number, even though the lot numbers will differ.  We will likely look to customization.  Thank you for your interest in the matter.
