Need to create custom identifier and ZPL code for GS1

Hi All 

I m exploring GS1 functionality , but unfortunately our business does not follow or have GTIN so I have to create a custom identifier for item id with variable length So help me with GS1 prerequisites and code to generate the zpl , TIA
