updating hq past 2.04 makes it not start

Hidy ho all,

I have a virtual server running server 2012.  I'm trying to setup a practice hq to experiment with, and I would like the server to run it.

however, when installing the updates past service pack 4 (the hotfix, service pack 2, feature pack 1, service pack 4), it keeps throwing up run-time error '429' (activex component can't create object).  Now I'm no stranger to this error, quite frequently I have to do either a repair install or a fresh install of RMS store operations to fix this error.

But i've done half a dozen fresh installs of RMS HQ and/or HQ client.  Every time I update them past service pack 4 I get this error message.  I've tried running in compatibility mode, running with admin rights, no matter what I try I can't get this error to go away.

Have you checked the folder security on the HQ Server folder.  Windows 8 and 2012 secure the program files directory and restrict access to program files folder to every user except trusted installer.  HQ Server is probably having problems creating the log or registering components.

I'm running the installs with admin permissions.  i was getting an error whenever I tried to run them without admin permissions.

i'm also running the installers as the administrator user.

So did running the installs as Admin correct the issue for you?

I still think you need to adjust the security on the microsoft RMS folder manually using windows explorer.  Make sure the user you are running the install under has ownership of the folder.  This has worked for me in the past.

No, I'm afraid running the installers as an admin didn't fix anything.

It keeps throwing up the error when I update it past 2.04.

oh, and adjusting the permissions on the folder, I gave everyone full access.  Still getting the same error.

Edit: sorry for the late reply.  Last week was a busy one, and I didn't have time to work on this little issue.

Did you take ownership of the folder?  This is different than just setting everyone to full access.

I just did, yes.  I also tried re-installing the program with admin rights, after taking ownership of the whole C drive.

    Still getting the same error

We need to narrow done the scope of the problem.  The installer for the updates is throwing the error?

After install, a program is throwing the error?  Which program, SO Manager, POS, HQClient, HQServer, HQ Manager?

Do you have any opos drivers installed on your virtual machine?

Also does RMS have full registry access to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Retail Management System\

Which version of SQL Server are you running?

Have you install the 2005 Backwards compatibility pack for SQL Server?

You could also skip all the manual updates and just install CU5 directly.  Microsoft changes their naming and stance on updates.  CU5 is cumulative and it is basically Service Pack 5 with a different name.

Also, in this environment, it should be 2008 R2 with updates, SQL 2012 (less updates).  2014 is not officially supported yet.

Fair enough.  First and foremost, all the installers run fine.  I see the error directly after I update the RMS on the server past 2.04 (which is service pack 4), and try to run any portion of the HQ server or client.

I am using SQL express 2008 R2 with 2005 Backward Compatibility.

I have not tried skipping past all the updates to cumulitive update 5, but I'll give that a go and see what happens.

Edit: also, I deleted the original virtual server a week ago (which I had messed around with previously) and put a fresh install together.  This new server is still server 2012, but with a blank slate.  i'm still seeing the same issues when I update past 2.04.

I'm going to re-install RMS HQ & HQ client, then try just updating to CU5 and report back.

Second edit: hokay, so skipping over all the other updates and just installing CU5 still produces the same result.

if it was possible to upload images in my reply I'd gladly show you exactly what I'm talking about.

Was that clear enough, or did I manage to confuse everyone a bit more?

Yes that is clear.  I was away this July 4th Holiday.  Let me setup a test system and see if I can recreate and resolve the issue.  I would like to know the answer.

    Give me a few days.

Also, to post images, click the "Use rich formatting" link on the reply box and paste in any images.  I have done this a few times.
