    RE: Ribbon: Enable Rules/Display Rules

Some of the rules that you can apply to the enable/disable rules are different, but basically the RibbonDiffXml, which builds up the command bar on your CRM HomePage or Form was introduced in CRM 2011, when there was no command bar, but a Ribbon.

In CRM 2011 the Display Rules would hide the item from your ribbon, while the Enable Rules would disable them on the form.

When Microsoft moved away from Ribbon and into Command Bar, they kept the structure of the Ribbon Xml, which is why we still have both the Display Rules and the Enabled Rules.

You can use either rules to specify whether or not you want to show a button on your command bar.

The best way to configure these of course is using Ribbon Workbench by Scott Durow.

I'd also add that, it seems, Enable rules are more like "client side" rules, while display rules are more like "server side" rules.. that would explain why we can't use "customrule" for the display rules, for example (since that would be a javascript that has to run on the client).

And that's, probably, why in the description of the refreshRibbon method only enable rules are mentioned:
