CRM Online Microsoft hosted vs. Partner hosted

I am looking to launch CRM in a medium sized business and I am trying to understand the advantages and disadvantages to having the hosting provided by Microsoft vs the Partner. Does one provide a better upgrade path? Azure benefits? portability to Dynamics 365? Other variables that I am not even thinking of?

RE: CRM Online Microsoft hosted vs. Partner hosted

CRM Online hosted by Microsoft will give you access to the latest features before on-premises (which includes partner-hosted), including some features that are not currently planned to be releaed for on-premises (such as relevance search and mobile offline, both of which rely on Azure behind the scenes).

While you can schedule CRM Online upgrades to some extent, there comes a point where you have to upgrade, which means more testing, potentially more user training and so on. If you are partner hosted, you will typically have much more time to do this which some customers prefer.

There are lots of other differences in smaller things such as data export limitations, reporting using SQL rather than Fetch XML and so on. These are fairly well covered on various blogs.

This is a common questions I see, where customers are uncertain about what partner hosted really is. In a very simplistic way think of it as on-premise where you don't have to worry too much about the hardware.

There's really a million shades of grey when it comes to partner hosted, make sure the partner is reputable and is offering a good service. I've seen too many performance issues where the hosting partner tries to shift blame on anything but the kitchen sink.

As Adam mentioned, you get to stay closer to the upgrade path with Online, and you get to take advantage all the latest and greatest features available though the O365 integration.

As a partner hosted supplier, we see a gap where 365 might not meet the requirement, although partner hosted is the on-premise version, and may not have some of the 365 features, if there is a need for a dedicated platform where CRM is a component then offering a dedicated platform wins, we also see smaller organisations that want a basic systems
