What is the significance of providing security access to the type "Files" (Tables) in "Security Task Setup"

Dear All,

What is the significance of providing security access to the type "Files" (Tables) in "Security Task Setup". And if we we are not providing access to the Files what are functionalities which we will not have access to in GP. So far I have never tried this option, but everything seems working, that why out of curiosity I am asking this question.

    Hi Leslie,

Could you expound on that a little?  I have a project to audit security at my company and the first thing I want to do is remove duplicates and anything unnecessary.  Primarily to reduce the massive number of operations that exist within a task.  I understand what you are saying about custom reports but we do not use custom reports within GP.  We have modified reports but all custom or new reports we create in SSRS or SmartList builder.  Would the same limitation exist I am guessing for SmartLists created using GP tables instead of a SQL View or Script?  Can you think of any other limitations imposed if I remove Files from Tasks?

    Thanks much!

    Hi Suresh,

Let me give you one example. Let's say a user has the role of Payables Clerk, Has Access to Report Writer and has access to the Custom Reports. This user goes out to Report Writer and creates a report against one of the payroll tables. So far, so good. Now, when this user goes into Custom Reports and tries to print this self-created payroll report, they will be denied access.

    Kind regards,

    Leslie
