Profile Workflow - Debug custom workflow activity

Hi All,

I have a custom workflow activity used as part of a process (workflow), it is throwing an exception and I want to debug it.

I am using the PRT to profile the workflow but when I select the target workflow I cannot continue and select the step as it is disabled. I have watched many tutorials and nobody seems to have any issues.

Thanks

I'm not using it at my current work so I don't have any good examples, but something tells me that it has something to do with arguments.
There is also this thread that discusses it, however it's not verified: https://community.dynamics.com/forums/thread/details/?threadid=8e3b3e4d-6453-418f-85fc-192d360dbd7c

Do you have any arguments in your workflow activity?

Good point, it looks to be Power Platform based so maybe CI-J?
    It's some customer response entity

Profile Workflow - Debug custom workflow activity
If the step selection in the Plugin Registration Tool (PRT) is disabled when trying to profile a Custom Workflow Activity (CWA), there are several possible reasons:
    Possible Causes & Solutions

    1 The Workflow is Asynchronous
Issue: The PRT does not support profiling asynchronous workflows.
SolutionConvert the workflow to a real-time (synchronous) workflow.
    Re-register and retry profiling

    2. The Workflow is Inactive or Not in a Runnable State
Issue: The workflow must be activated for the step selection to be enabled.
    Solution:
Check the workflow status in Dynamics 365:
    1. Navigate to Advanced Find → Processes.
    2. Ensure the workflow is activated.
If the workflow was recently modified, deactivate and re-activate it before profiling.
4.The Workflow is a Child Workflow
Issue: If the Custom Workflow Activity is in a child workflow, it may not be directly selectable.
    Solution:
    1. Try profiling the parent workflow instead.
    2. Ensure that the child workflow runs synchronously, so it executes within the profiled session.
    5. PRT is Outdated or Bugged
Issue: Older versions of PRT may have issues detecting workflow steps.
    Solution:
    1. Download the latest Plugin Registration Tool from the Power Platform Tools repository.
    6. User Permissions Issue
Issue: The user might lack permissions to profile workflows.
    Solution:
    1. Ensure the user has System Administrator or Customization permissions.
    2. If debugging in a sandbox environment, ensure the correct security roles are assigned.
    7. The Workflow is Not Being Triggered Correctly
Issue: If the workflow hasn’t been triggered in the environment, PRT won’t have data to attach the profiler.
    Solution:
    1. Run a test record through the workflow.
    2. Refresh the Plugin Registration Tool and try again.
    8. Profiling Was Not Started Correctly
Issue: The profiling session might not have been started properly.
    Solution:
    1. In PRT, ensure you Start Profiling before executing the workflow.
    2. After running the workflow, go back to PRT and select the profile.
    Final Steps to Try
    1. Restart PRT and Dynamics 365 session.
    2. Enable Plugin Trace Logs as an alternative debugging method.
    3. If all else fails, recompile and redeploy the Custom Workflow Activity to see if it refreshes.
