Historically, XML files of 37MB or more have been uploading successfully for cases.
Recently, a 35MB XML file failed for being too large. File sizes of 15MB & 8MB also failed. When the file size is under 5MB it appears to upload successfully.
Since the original file was simply split into 6 or 7 files and then successfully upload, I think this ruled out any data issue within the file.

The default file upload limit is 5MB. You can change the file size limit in system settings.
Settings > Administration > System Settings
Click on Email Tab.
Maximum file size (in kilobytes) field - Change it to highest value 32768 (for CRM 2013). You won't be able to upload the 37MB file.
