Preventing Posting to Dimensions for Accumulated Depreciation

Hi:

For the Depreciation Expense account in the chart of accounts, we have dimension values.

For the Accumulated Depreciation account in the chart of accounts, we do not have dimension values.

This is the correct setup.

For all Fixed Asset Cards, dimension values reside.  Dimension values need to be posted to for Depreciation Expense but not for Accumulated Depreciation.

But, when we run Calculate Depreciation, the resulting Fixed Asset G/L Journal shows dimension values for both Depreciation Expense and Accumulated Depreciation.

The only remedy that I see is to use Edit in Excel for the journal to remove the dimensions for the Accumulated Depreciation records.

Is there any way of preventing posting to dimensions for just Accumulated Depreciation?

Thanks!

John

John, there is no way to get the dimension on the expense and not on the accumulated depreciation. It really doesn't hurt anything to have the dimension in the accumulated depreciation entries.

    Hi Vinita:

Thank you, for this good information!

    Honestly, I don't think that that's what I'm saying.

There are dimensions with these fixed assets.  Upon running depreciation, Depreciation Expense and Accumulated Depreciation are posted to, of course.

I'm trying to prevent dimensions from being posted to Accumulated Depreciation and allow for posting to Depreciation Expense.

Currently, the system is posting to both accounts even though the Chart of Accounts says "No, don't post to dimensions for Accumulated Depreciation."

    Hi

I think what you are trying to imply is that the 2nd entry gets posted automatically after the 1st one is done?

    Please search for Dimension combination

"To avoid posting entries with contradictory or irrelevant dimensions, you can block or limit specific combinations of two dimensions. A blocked dimension combination means that you cannot post both dimensions on the same entry regardless of what the dimension values are. "
