Hello everyone,

I am trying to install SQL Server 2005 on on Windows Server 2003 operating system, The installation goes fine except for the very last componets that is Workstation components, Books online and Development Tools, the icon turns RED (all other components are marked GREEN, meaning successfully setup).

I have tried the ADD or REMOVE program to add the Client component and Books online, it yeilded no result. Please what can i do to get it installed cos i can't even see the Management studio installed for this reason.

Saheed.

Have you checked your event viewer? If not, SQL Server should have an installation. Otherwise, you are better off addressing your question in the SQL Server forum.

I have experienced this same problem. I resolved it by copying all the files from the SQL Server 2005 disc to my hard drive. Then I ran the setup.exe file from my hard drive instead of the dvd and it installed the workstation components with no problems.

    Hope this resolves your issue.

    Hi Saheed,

Don't bother with the installation routine of SQL 2005 CD.... if it's not working you've two other options at least :

    1. access the SQL Server Books Online on the MSDN directly thru that link : http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms130214.aspx

    Thanks Beat,

I need to understand the options you provided.

1st Option: Are saying i won't be needing to use the SQL CD, that i will be able to do a complete installation that will also show the Management studion cos the Management studio was not showing when the Workstation component and Books online failed.

2nd Option: Is the link for downloading only the Workstation components and Books online. Will i have to still use the CD first before downloading the seperate installable package of SSBO

     Hi Saheed,

Just try to remember that the SQL Server Books Online is an optional component part of the Studio Management installation (and SQL 2005 of course), so you should be able to run a regular installation of the components without the SSBO. That was the purpose of the 1st option, since you can access the SSBO directly on the MSDN network library.

The link for the download will provide an installable package that contains just the SSBO updated by November 2008. So there is nothing else within it and it can be installed anywhere as a single application..

    Hi Beat,

Really appreciate your effort at resolving my problem, i shall definitely do that. But you've not made mention of Workstation (client) component because the failed setup is Workstation components and Books online..I need to know the effect of not installing Workstation components? Hope does not affect the Management studio.

    Saheed

     Hi Saheed,

I apologize, I should really have read completely  thru your original post first :-)... I didn't realized that your client install was not OK too.. Have you tried to download from scratch the ISO image from Microsoft ? or even the complete SQL 2005 latest install package and run it from the network (or a mounted ISO image ) ?

Unfortunately I don't think that the Studio Management Express tools are coming alone, they are packed only in the global package of SQL 2005. You can select during the installation the Management Studio option alone without installing all the rest. Of course, to be able to connect, you should at least have the SQL 2005 Native client installed, because otherwise I think Studio Mgmt wont connect to the server.
