Import lookup fields -- "a duplicate lookup reference was found"

Hi I am importing contacts into CRM which contain a lookup field. I found, if 2 contacts has the same value for the look-up field, then the two contacts won't be imported into the system successfully. And, the system says "a duplicate lookup reference was found". Is there any way to figure it out? Thank you very much!

    This isn't based on the 2 Contacts having the same lookup field.  You are basically importing Contacts into the system and then matching a Lookup Field to match on a certain field value e.g. Set Account Lookup on Contact matching on Account Name.  Now if there are 2 Accounts in the system with the same name, the system will not know which lookup reference to resolve to and hence the error message.
