Backing Up/Restoring to Test Company

Hello,

I have created a backup file using Microsoft Dynamics GP, creating a file with a .bak file extension.  Is this the only file needed for a full company restore up to that point?  Are there any integrity checks for that file required to ensure it was backed up correctly?

Follow up: Would it be possible to restore that backup to an already existing Test Company?  The Test Company has all the same users with the same privileges as the live company  (We had an outside party setup the Test Company for us, and I'm assuming what they did was restore a backup of the  Live Company in a different instance.)  If it is possible, could this be done using Microsoft Dynamics GP, or is SQL Server Enterprise Mananger/ SQL Server Management Studio required?

Thanks for your help.

Collin

I simply use SQL Server Enterprise Mananger/ SQL Server Management Studio.

    1. I run a backup to disk for the Production database
    2. Switch the Test database to Single User Mode
    3. Run a restore to overwrite Test database with the backup of Production
    4. I finish by running a SQL query that renames the database to Test in Test

I do this procedure all the time.

    Hi Collin,

The environment setup of live data to a test company can be split it into two.

    1. The test company resides on the save server where as Live Company.

    2. The test company totally on a different server.

For the option 1: You can copy the live company data and restore it on the test company.

For the option 2: You should be copying both the Dynamics & the Company database back up to the separate instance and restore the both.

You require both the Microsoft Dynamics GP & SQL to make sure the restore process is completed successful.

For both the options: In order to avoid the conflict of the Company ID & Interid. You should be executing SQL scripts to correct it on the test company and additional  steps to be followed.

For copying users use the capture login script.

    Hi Shan,

What are the steps to backup the Company Database, can this be done in Dynamics GP, or does it have to be done in SQL?

    Thanks,

    Collin

It can be done in both GP and SQL.

From Microsoft Dynamics GP >> Maintenance >>Backup.

From SQL>> Right Click on the company Database>>Tasks>>Backup.

While I like the keep it simple thinking on this reply, it misses one of the key problems related to the process and that is the change that is needed for the SY00100 table in the newly restored TEST Company.

Since the release of (at least) GP2013 you have had to match up the SY00100 Company ID with the Dynamics Database Company ID.

When you restore Live over to Test - test takes on the ID of Live, but it fails to work as now the system has two databases with the same company ID.

Long and short - you have to change the SY00100 back to the value of the TEST database - as it was before you restore LIVE -

    Hope this helps.

    Shan,

My apologies, I meant to ask for the steps to backup the Dynamics Database - can this be done from Microsoft Dynamics GP, or SQL only?

    Thanks,

    Collin

Collin, you can backup either the DYNAMICS or specific company database from the same location in the GP application - if you are running the GP application from the Server.

If not, then the only option will be in SQL Server Management Studio and select the DYNAMICS database.

    Hope this helps.

    Bill,

Thanks I have found System Database through Microsoft Dynamics GP.

So with a Backup of System Database, and the backup of the Company - would these two be the only  backups I would need to restore that company from a scratch GP application on a new Server?

    Thanks,

    Collin

Collin, the links that Shan provides (above) along with database backups you have here should be all that is needed.

On a new server installation be sure to watch for the change of server name, it does cause issues with security, but if you follow the instructions provided in the link that should be pretty safe for you.

When I move to a new server, one thing that I do first is to install the GP application as if it is brand new on that new server - that way all the right database entries are made in the Master database, all the right files are created to communicate and all the right permissions are created for the SA user.

After I have created the new installation, I create the company database.

Once this is done, I then restore the 'Dynamics' and 'Company' databases from the other server, make the necessary changes in security and then I am ready to go.

Let us know if you need additional assistance.
