Production order component remaining quantity

Hello!

We are studying the behavior of the remaining quantity field of production components.

We have seen a strange behavior that we would like to share with the community to see if it is a bug or if we are missing something to understand.

We have defined a desk item and its BOM includes a 10 pcs of screw. If I manufacture 10 units of the desk in the component requirements I see that per desk unit I need 10 screws and therefore for the whole order 100 units. As I have not started with the order it keeps telling me that I have to consume 100.

Now we go to the Item Journal to register the consumption of 10 screws to try to manufacture a desk but with such bad luck that this unit is scrap.

Once made the post in the item jounal when returning to the status of the components we see that now tells us that we have 90 left to consume when really I am still pending to manufacture the 10 desks. That is, we expected to see 100 units.

We understand that the current consumption if you have to take into account this consumption but when calculating the outstanding amount this should be equal to the outstanding units to be manufactured by the expected consumption for each unit. In other words, we should still see 100 units.

What do you think? Could it be a mistake? If the behavior is as expected, do you think that, is overwriting the remaining quantity behavior a good idea or could we have problems?

I am using the following version with the Cronus demo data: ES Business Central 17.3 (Platform 17.0.20458.21738 + Application 17.3.20469.20653)

I have upload a video in order to review the example.

    David,

I teach my customers to add on the Output Journal or Production Journal for Output Line, Scrap Code so they can report on different Scrap Reasons.

You are correct that if you increase the Quantity it will alter the Original Quantity. This is why some just create new Consumption for the components and on the Output add back the 1 remanufactured to show 10 Finished and 1 Scrap. One more thought... Sometimes the Scrapped Items are set aside and a new Released Prod. Order for to recreate is completed. Not knowing the actual Item and if the scrapped Output can be taken apart or partially used, a new Released Prod. Order is created for 1.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks,

    Steve

    Thank you Steve!

Based on your expirience your customers will later analyze the scrap reasons and the estimated cost of a production order against the real cost?

If we increase the production order quantity to 11, then the remaning consumptions will be right but not the expected ones as the original quantity was 10 not 11. For our customer if the lose a part that means that that production order line will be more expensive that the estimated cost and also the benefit will be less. They use the scrap quantity for later check the performance of the production process. For example, we show the OEE of the machine based on the expected quantity against the lost quantity. But also the estimated consumptions against the real ones. Also, I don't know exactly what happens with the inventory and the reserves if the production order comes from a sale order.

For this reason we can't change the original quantity of the production order.

Maybe we need to overwrite that behaviour but maybe is a little bit risky.

    David,

Your question and detail information are spot on. If I have a Prod. Order and want to manufacture 10 pieces, the Component consumption will occur and post based on the Consumption Journal or Production Journal entries. If I scrap any quantity of the 10, the Components will not replan/recalculate given the Output entry recorded scrap. When this occurs I normally teach my customers and users that if they still want to complete the Original Quantity you will need to change the Quantity, update the Released Prod. Order and recalculate it to update the Components and Routing information. I have also had my customer pull additional components and consume them and added the finished Qty to the Output so in my example they would have produced 10 and scrap 1.

I will say that your question is a nice idea if BC did this but it might need some setup to see if companies want such an action.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks,

    Steve
