Enter more JEs and post to Historical Year

We would like to know if we need to push more Journal Entries and post to historical year 2012 (we had done year-end closing in year 2012 and 2013).  Does it mean we can or cannot post JEs to Year 2012?

What if we want to do it?  Can system allow us to post?

Please advise

Thanks,

Josey

    Hello Josey

This is a common issue that has always been brought up to discussion. The rules are thoroughly illustrated in the support article "Article ID: 851093" . Dynamics GP does not allow posting transactions to the year that comes before the most recent historical year. So if both 2012 and 2013 are closed, posting to 2012 will result with the common error message "You cannot post more than one year prior to the first day of the earliest open year". 7

The good news comes in the new version of Dynamics GP 2013 R2 which allows reversing a historical year so that you can do such adjustment. Otherwise, you do need to call Microsoft, you may pay a little to get this done perfectly.

Please let us know if you need any further assistance,

    Hi Josey,

You can post only one recent historical year so in your case you can post only on 2013.  If you wanted post prior to 2013 it can be done only through sql script.  Please check whether you have allowed the post to historical year on the following window.

Financial >> Setup >> Financial >> General Ledger

I would have some concerns about the SQL method, it is not an easy option to consider since lots of aspects should be taken care of.

I agree Mohmoud as you said if its 2013 R2 reversing historical year will be really good option.

    Hi Mahmoud,

Our GP version number is 12.00.1745.  Will this version allow us to post historical year?

Do we need to uncheck the checkbox in "Historical Year" in Fiscal Year window for Year 2012 in order to post the 2012 JEs Batch?

    Please advise

    Thanks,

    Josey

1745 will get you there. Just look at the bottom of the financial year-end closing window and you'll see the Reverse Historical Year button. Yay!

    Mahmoud,

I am confused because this was my understanding that by design, you can only to the last historical year. However,  I was researching on other posts and I found one that says that there is a tool on PSTL that we can use to open a historical year. Is it the same thing?

    See below the text:

You can use one of the tools in the Professional Services Tools Library to 'open' a closed year. The transaction will not 'roll forward' the balances, so you need to be sure to follow through with other postings

    Can you please explain?

That's right, and the logic is still valid since you will manually have to roll the balances forward. What's used in the PSTL is the "Fiscal Period Modifier".

Although, with the release of this new feature "Reverse Historical Year", the process has become much more easier.
