Is it possible to generate barcode image from a value from a field?

Hi!

I need to produce a barcode image based on a value of a text field in Dynamics CRM 365 Online. The idea is to scan a barcode from a product to CRM (as text to a field on a product form), then I need to generate a barcode to be shown as an image in CRM at the product form so I can export the barcode (as a picture) from CRM to a report / excel file with other info realted to the product.

Is this even possible? With or without coding, plug-ins or add-ins, in any way?

Thanks again!

    Hi Katri,

    There are a few ways to make the barcode visible in CRM but it'll be tougher to make a report with it. Based on your requirement, you don't need the image in CRM, you just need to be able to generate the barcode in different applications.

    You can use a free API like http://www.barcodes4.me/ to pass in a URL and get back an image. You can call it using http://barcodes4.me/barcode/{type}/{barcodevalue}.{format}

    Ex:

    The URL of "barcodes4.me/.../1234567890.png" returns a png image.

    It sounds like the easiest way for you would be to have a report with an external URL embedded in it that calls out to the URL by passing in the barcode value, then rendering the resulting images.

    If you absolutely need the image from within CRM, you could have an IFrame on your form which calls that same API, or if you want to store the image in CRM you would write a plugin that runs when the barcode is set which calls the API and stores the image as a Note on the product.

    Hope this helps! I'd appreciate if you'd mark this as Answering your question.

    Thanks,

    Aiden

    Hi Katri,

    you should create an html web resource that uses the barcode font.

    Via javascript on form load, get the numeric product code and insert it into the html resource.

    Same behavior for the Excel template.

    Install the bar code font and then set the cell that will containt the product code value with barcode style.
