No, setting up Inventory Periods is not a strict requirement for Business Central to function.

Business Central operates perfectly fine for inventory transactions and costing without explicitly defined Inventory Periods.

However, it is highly recommended and beneficial for:

    • Accurate Costing: Especially if you use inventory costing methods like Average or FIFO, closing inventory periods ensures that inventory costs are accurately adjusted and finalized up to a specific date. This prevents historical adjustments from impacting past cost calculations.

    • Performance: For very large databases, closing inventory periods can help improve performance on inventory-related reports and processes by finalizing calculations for older periods.

    • Reporting: It provides a clear cutoff point for inventory valuation and cost of goods sold reporting.

    • Audit Trail: It creates an audit trail for when inventory values were formally closed.

    •

In summary: Not a requirement to use BC, but a strong recommendation for accurate and controlled inventory costing and reporting.

    Hello John,

The configuration of inventory periods in Business Central is not strictly necessary, but highly recommended depending on the inventory processes.

Inventory periods precisely allow you to close such periods, which blocks the posting of inventory transactions before a certain date. Run inventory valuation reports where it is also essential to have the inventory period.

In summary, inventory Periods are not mandatory, but using them provides better control and accuracy in inventory management

    I hope I can help.

    Regards,

    Andrés

It is not required, but one big benefit of closing the Inventory Period every month is that it can limit item postings.
This way, the account can be closed in two stages: item posting and general posting.

    Hope this helps.
    Thanks.

    It's an optional.
I would recommend using it if you want more restrictions for your inventory posting.

    Hello John,

No, setting up Inventory Periods in Business Central is not a strict requirement, however it is highly recommended. Inventory Periods help control and manage inventory closing activities by preventing backdated transactions once a period is closed. Without them, users can still post inventory transactions, but it becomes harder to maintain data consistency and accurate inventory valuation.

Hope this answer will help you!
