Workflow to check customer exists before creating it

Dear All,

I have a workflow that creates a case from an incoming email. This is working great.

BUT....

When the case is created it needs to have a customer that it is assigned to and I have programmed the workflow to create one. The trouble is that it creates a new record every time that a new case is created.

I have read around and it seems that I need to have a plugin that runs and checks whether it exist or not etc. But I cannot find any good examples.

Please could someone point me in the right direction (CRM 2011)

Thanks,

Jaggie

    Jaggie,

You are going to have to write a custom workflow extension that will use the SDK to check for a duplicate.

There are some samples and conversations on this link on this subject - stackoverflow.com/.../how-to-identify-duplicate-records-with-a-plugin-in-dynamics-crm-2011

In the SDK itself there is some sample code for checking duplicates when creating and updating records.

    Thanks for your reply,

Please forgive my newbieness but I am struggling to understand the different between a custom workflow and a plugin. The links that you have sent me seem to be for a plugin rather than a custom workflow.

What I can't grasp is way this is such a difficult think. When I ask a workflow to create a contact I don't expect it to create one if one exists all ready - The web interface does it already...

    Is there no other way?

Maybe you might know of a solution to do email to case (ideally open source! :) that can do this for me?

Thanks so much for your help.

    Jaggie
