Dashboards - Calculated Fields

I'm quite new to Dashboards, and am trying to add calculated fields.  Can this be done on the dashboard/view or does a calculated field need to be created and kept up-to-date?

For example I want the days since the contact was last contacted, also the number days that a quote has been active (TODAY - Quote.CreatedOn).

Thanks

    Hi

Like any regular field, you need to create it at the entity level.

Then if you want to display it on your dashboard, you need to add the fields to the views or graphs that your dashboard is displaying.

I'm quite surprised about this.  So any calculated field used in a dashboard has to be created on the entity?

Yes, that's how Dynamics CRM / 365 Customer Engagement works.

Attributes, calculated or not, are related to entities.

You might display some aggregated data in a dashboard graph (for example total amountq for open opportunities, per month) but that kind of data is not stored, queried or exported

Maybe it's worth clarifying this a bit more.. Dynamics dashboards are not meant to compete with Power BI (or even Excel) when it comes to the data analysis. They do cover some basic/relatively advanced scenarios, but, if you want more than that, you need to use other tools such as Power BI.

That's great for Dynamics 365 users but what about those still on CRM 2013? There is no "calculated field" type available.

Is there anyone who has found a way to display a calculated field on the dashboard in some other (elegant) way please?

What I want to do is a basic subtraction between today's date and the date a case was changed to a particular status (for instance "Waiting List"), so I could show in the dashboard how long a case has been in that state, in this example how long a case has been on a waiting list.

    Anyone?
