Hello,

I am looking for some advice for my recent issue with a General journal batch workflow.
In August 2025, it was tested and worked well, However, in September, it did not work, error message is "Record Type General journal batch is not supported by this workflow response"

I used the general batches(testing entries), and workflow is pasted here, can someone help with this issue?
I have the same question (0)

    hi

The error “Record Type General journal batch is not supported by this workflow response” usually occurs when the workflow is configured with a record type that is not supported by the chosen workflow responses. While it may have worked in August during testing, changes such as cumulative updates, environment refreshes, or configuration adjustments may have caused the General Journal Batch record type to stop being recognized. In Business Central, workflows natively support General Journal Line approval but not General Journal Batch approval, which is why the error appears. The recommended solution is to reconfigure your workflow to use General Journal Line as the record type instead of General Journal Batch, then link the workflow responses (such as approval, notifications, or restrictions) to the journal lines. Alternatively, if you require batch-level approval, you would need to customize the workflow using AL extensions to extend workflow events and responses for the General Journal Batch table. For most cases, switching to General Journal Line approval resolves the problem and aligns with standard BC workflow functionality.

    Hi,

The error occurs because some workflow responses (e.g., Send Approval Request) might not support the record type General Journal Batch. In Business Central, approval workflows for journals typically work at the General Journal Line level.
    Try below possible solutions:
    • Change the workflow to use General Journal Line as the record type for approval events and responses.
    • Alternatively, use the standard template General Journal Line Approval Workflow instead of creating a custom batch-level workflow.
Mark true, “Does this answer your question” if it helps.

    Hello,

I copied a General line approval workflow from the template, without any edits,
In the test, I submitted a entry for line approval, however, the manager received the same error message. Record type Gen. Journal line is not supported by this workflow response.

    Hi

To resolve the "Record Type General journal batch is not supported by this workflow response" error in the General Journal Batch Approval Workflow, reconfigure the workflow to use the General Journal Line record type instead of the batch level. This error often appears after updates or system changes that impact workflow compatibility, especially if the batch-level workflow was working previously but is now unsupported or deprecated for certain responses. Switching to line-level approvals is currently the recommended approach, as this is supported by newer versions and aligns with Business Central's approval architecture.
    • Update the workflow by creating a new approval workflow that targets General Journal Lines rather than batches.
    • Ensure all conditions and responses reference individual journal lines, removing or replacing actions that apply specifically to batches.
    • After saving, deploy and test the workflow to confirm approval requests now work without the error message.

    Thanks

Hi, If you created it from a template, there shouldn't be any issues. I've tested this before.
I suggest deleting it and recreating it.

In Payment Journal there's a button to send the batch for approval.  That button returns an error that no workflow for this type is set. It looks to me like we have to create the batch option manually, there's no template for that.  When we create that flow, we get the above error, "Record type Gen. Journal Batch is not supported by this workflow response."

Changing the workflow to lines rather than batches doesn't solve the problem. We still want to be able to request approval of the whole batch.

Either the button for whole batch approval needs to be removed because that function got nerfed, or this is a bug that needs to be addressed.

How do we request approval for a Journal Batch?  I'm specifically looking at the Payment Journal area.
