How can I utilise the same part number for two different parts in GP Dynamics Manufacturing

Recently we had a project being led by an individual who was running all the inventory items offline.

He used the same part number for two different parts for two different projects.

Project #1 uses the part number, this is for one part.

Project #2  uses the part number, this is for an assembly that contains the same part above.

Obviously I cannot use the same PART # for two different setups in the system.

Could I use and ABC code ? PART001A for Project #1 and PART001B for Project#2?

Any and all help is greatly apprecaited, thank you.

Mark

Based on your explanation, it truly is a different form, fit or function.   In this scenario it really should be a separate item number. If it is an assembly, there are other parts or a process added to the project 1, so it should be a separate item number and have a BOM.

True. The only problem is that we cannot change the part nubmers as they are being used by both of the vendors systems, they reference this part number. Do you think leaving the external part number for vendors the same then use some osrt of alias for two different part nubmers in the Bom and so on? would that work?

Is part A a purchased part?   If so, you could use the vendor item number and create a different item in GP to use as the purchased part (ie, project A), then use the vendor item number as a part in GP for project B.   On the PO, you can show the vendor item as the part so vendor A is not confused.   Would that work?

    Dan,

All the items are purcahsed, they jsut pass through items for both projects.

Sounds liek this would work, does it not?

I agree that you MUST have two different part numbers.  If you are selling these parts to customers and need to show the same part number on two different invoices for two different cutomers, set up two different part numbers in inventory and then a customer/item cross reference record listing the customer, your internal part number, and the part number the customer uses (which does NOT need to be unique).

    But generally, stop this practice.

I have to agree with Richard on this one. I think his solution is really the only one that makes sense.
