Process Manufacturing for Recipes

Hi:

I believe that it is possible to conduct process manufacturing in Business Central and, specifically, to contain food recipes within Production Bills of Material.

Are there other opinions?

Thanks!

John

    Hi John,

Although technically you can use a BOM as a recipe, it does not really satisfy the needs of the food manufacturing industry out of the box. The Production BOM is what it appears - there is no underlying ability to add recipes to it.

AppSource has a bunch of food manufacturing specific addons for Business Central that allow you to separate the recipe for the actual product from the BOM used to package it.  They also allow you to record in process quality data, record equipment quality testing (bio testing and all that stuff needed in food), handle lab/kitchen product, manage batch production and the date code assignments etc.

I would suggest looking into those.

It's not at all in BC Standard. For process manufacturing you need a big, expensive 3rd party add-on. For process manufacturing many features are needed: the recipes, the instructions, the changes of weight and consistency, high security features, quality assurance and many more. If the branche is the food branche then there are many additional things like the reversion of the sell process, means setting the prize after selling, therefore many challenges in invoicing, aso.

@CU10020717-0: for sure they use a 3rd party addon or many customizations.

I actually have the same question and have been wondering about this as well. I’m also looking into using Business Central for process manufacturing, particularly around managing food recipes within Production Bills of Material.
I’d be interested to hear how others are handling this in practice, or if there are limitations or alternative approaches that work better. From a practical standpoint, it feels similar to how restaurants streamline both back-end processes and front-end experiences — like when places such as Texas Roadhouse manage complex recipes behind the scenes while still offering simple, modern conveniences at checkout. If you’ve ever wondered does texas roadhouse take apple pay, that kind of seamless payment option is a great example of how thoughtful systems improve the overall customer experience.
