CRM 4.0 - Editing our main workflow

I'm sorry if this is the most basic question ever asked, but "editing CRM workflows" was just added to my list of responsibilities, so yes, I'm new.

We have one main workflow that runs whenever a new ticket is created in the system in order to update a number of fields and route the ticket to the correct person. Now I need to edit this workflow in order to facilitate a significant change. The change itself is the easy part (already have that logic worked out, on paper).

The question is; when I go to edit the Workflow, I have to unpublish it first. Does that mean the workflow will be "off" and not run while I'm doing the editing? Because if it is, our entire system will come to a screeching halt...

Correct - if a Workflow is no longer active, then it will not be apply to any new records that triggers it.

I would try this: Create a separate new workflow including newly updated logic and then peform a quick switch over during down time - should take only a few seconds to coordinate this.  Maybe during the weekend.

    Frank,

Thanks for the answer. I suspected as much ...

I really don't want to re-create the workflow, as it's fairly long and complex, and recreating all that could introduce errors. However, on the flip side, if I break it when editing, then we're up the proverbial river without a paddle ... Looks like I have to bite the bullet and re-create it.
