OLE Notes on GP2015 R2

Hi All,

I have an issue where i've upgraded and migrated my client from Gp2010 to Gp2015 onto a new server.

I've tried the migration utility but timed out and ran the script from another thread and it worked in test but not in live :(

so i tried a few things, I moved the whole notes folder to the new server, updated the dex.ini file, went into the ap invoice and opened the notes, nothing there

pointed the dex.ini file to the old server location, opened the ap invoice, opened the attachment nothing there

launched my old gp2010, same ap invoice, opened the notes, no issue.

any ideas where I can go from here?

I tried unc path, local path, mapped path in the dex.ini file, made sure there was a \ behind the path

thanks in advance

Ray

    Hi Ray,

Have you checked the Dynamics.set file?

    Hi Kirk,

I'm not too sure what I'll be looking for specifically in the dynamics.set file.

aren't notes and attachments part of the base dynamics gp install?

    thx

    Ray

    Hi Ray,

It looks like you can't go straight from GP2010 to GP 2015 when you have OLE Notes attached to your transactions.. Read on this blog post : http://www.prophet.ca/dynamics-gp-2015-upgrading-ole-notes-from-older-versions/

Somehow the migration utility for the OLE notes only works when you upgraded to 2013R2 first... and on top of that, the functionality has been deprecated in 2015, being replaced by Document Attachment.

    Hi Beat,

thanks for the response, it makes sense why the old method OLE doesn't work.

I upgraded straight from GP2010's latest SP to GP2015 R2. The migration utility worked in test and using the same server/environment but it's timing out on the same server with refreshed databases.

Any suggestions or recommendations to get the migration utility working to move the notes over? My client has been live for a week already with transactions and we cannot take the GP2010 and re-upgrade to GP2013R2 then to GP2015.

    thank-you

    Ray

    Hi Ray,

Unfortunately we're not using OLE notes at all.. and I must confess that I went straight from 2010 to 2015 too on my test bed system... I don't know what tables the migration utility is touching, but it may be worth a test to redo the upgrade on your side on a TEST bed system and monitor the activity with a SQL trace while the OLE Notes Migration utility runs.

    Hi Beat,

I've found the tables the utility updates. But the utility does 30/8000 notes everytime and the table increases. I ran it 10x and it does little by little. the powershell script should resolve the issue or it did in test, but didn't in live :(. I'm trying to figure a way around this connection time out issue. The sql server is set on unlimited connections already.

    I'll do some more digging,

    thx

    Ray

That's interesting.. could you compare the tables in both system and check if there are any constrains, indexes or triggers that could be different ? what are the tables ?

interesting enough, my co-worker after running the import tool about 20 times, got it all to push through.

not the best solution but it looks like it's working now

Microsoft updated the tool in May so it will now work with versions prior to GP2013 R2.  Just make sure that you download the current version.

The migration utility documentation does not spell a change to the OLE Notes path that is required..  In prior versions, OLE Notes would work from a shared network location.  Now, in order to run the utility succesfully, you must copy your OLE Notes folder tree to the GP program files Data folder and adjust the OLEPath= line in dex.ini accordingly.

    Hello,

we are in midst of upgrading from GP2013 to GP2016. We needed to go to GP2013 R2 and after running the OLE Migration Utility, about half of the notes/attachments migrated successfully and the other half didn't.

In looking at the detailed log file, the following error text appears for almost all the failed items:

System.ArgumentOutOfRangeException: startIndex cannot be larger than length of string

Has anyone seen this and/or has any suggestions.

    Thanks
