Test Company on a production server

We would like to know if anyone has experienced any problems by having a test company in GP on the production server.  We are evaluating whether to locate the test company for users on our test server or production server.  There are concerns, for example, that in the production environment there may be a performance impact or users may inadvertantly log into the wrong company if the test company is in prod.  Thanks for your feedback.

We have had test companies on the production server for 8 years now.

We mitigate some of the concerns you mentioned by naming the test companies in a special way:

    zzTEST - ProdCompanyName<TEST>

zzTEST puts it at the bottom of the list. and <TEST> at the end produces the "test" company message when logging in.

If the test company produces performance issues, you should address them in the production company.  There shouldn't be large numbers of users doing lots of posting anyway - it's a test system.

If you have the Support Debugging Tool installed you should also consider changing the color of the test companies so it is very noticeable that you are not in live. This has saved a lot of confusion for us.

    Hi

I have not had any problems with test companies on production servers so long as people know that ANY changes made to system-level items will affect the production company.

    Kind regards,

    Leslie

Good point Leslie.  Especially anything to do with Multi-Currency.

Also, when restoring the TEST company from a SQL backup of the LIVE company you have to be very careful.

    Good suggestion Mr.KIRKLIVERMONT.

If you are using Support Debugging Tool, this will help us to identify the Test company with help of the Color.

As Lessie said, if the users changes any system level settings on Test company it will also affect the Production company. So, better you can use "Support Debugging Tool" to change the color for Test company and differentiate with Production company.

    Hope this helps!!!

Just give access to the test company only to users who are comfortable in handling it...........

I echo the sentiments of everyone else on here, but would like to add:

    1) Create a pop-up box that notifies users upon logging in that this is a test company.

    2) We go as far as giving users more rights in the test company (as long as it's not things like financials) because there is no risk of breaking anything

    3) Schedule a backup/restore of live-to-test every night so people are always working with yesterday's data.

    Good suggestion Mr.Carl.

What are you suggesting in point one??

The pop-up is native to Dynamics GP by adding "<TEST>" to the company name.  There is need to develop or create anything short of typing.

    See this: blogs.msdn.com/.../setting-up-test-and-historical-companies.aspx

If my understanding is correct, we need to create a pop-up message while users choose Test Company Name from the Login screen based on the Carl fist point.

    Carl, am I correct?
